I had assumed that you had at least done some research that might show why people call him innovative, like Wiki or last.fm or whatever. Like I said, lazy research mate. You didn't find Hoist That Rag (the first track that I linked) innovative? What about these tracks I posted earlier?

Or this one? Could you show me some blues polka klezmer jazz that came before this? I'd love to hear it.

Just because he has his roots in blues doesn't strip him of innovation. Dälek has it's roots in hip hop and shoe gaze and industrial, but that doesn't make them any less innovative. Waits has had a massive career, some of it is more standard like what you posted, but by and large he's a creature of innovation.

Excuse my ignorance for asking, but is Tom Waits music really all that popular here in the United States?

Oh... OK. He played in the movie The Book of Eli portraying the engineer opposite Denzel Washington. I didn't know he was an actor too.

I kind of see your point this time concerning the race card, more so than any of the other times anyway. But it's no more bias than saying white people can't dance or play funk and soul music.

I personally never let race cloud my perseption of the music itself. It really in my opinion very rarely overshadows the music itself in any constructive way.
You're right.

I just often see certain claims that are made in the media often said on here too and I dont think that necessarily makes it accurate. I notice this is not really a forum oriented towards some of this artists that they claim innovated certain things so that could have something to do with it too.

I am not really representative of the forum. But I think of all the music that get discussed (I don't think) covers everything everyone likes or respect as innovative - just a fraction of it. There is a lot of music I like and artist I respect that I don't mention. And just because certain artists gets talked about more often on this site doesn't make them more relevant - just more talked about.

I listened to a couple of his songs and they were not innovative. People here insisted all his music was not and just specific songs (okay I get that now). It sounds to me that only a few songs are considered innovative and not his entire catalog so naturally anybody would have made the same assessment.

What year was these songs made? I have heard similar sounding songs.

Hoist That Rag - 2004
Rain Dogs & Singapore - 1985
Hell Broke Luce - 2011

Which songs were similar?

You are definitely not. I am very impressed and I am glad an opportunity presented itself for me to see that for myself.

You make great points. However, from what I have observed on this site from my time being here is that when some posters discuss certain acts outside their most knowledgeable genres, they at times are not as knowledge or make stereotypical media driven theories about them but when it comes to genres they care more about they make sure its accurate.

My Chemical Romance's debut is legitimately enjoyable.

Anyone between the ages of 18 & 50 who claim to be music fans and who know nothing at all about club music or culture are not worth taking seriously.
