The thing about Jackson is that, unlike a lot of pop stars today, he didn't need 12 or 13 other people to write and produce his songs. There were only two or three songwriters max on Thriller, and all of those songs kick ass. Not to mention you had an all star cast on the various instruments (including all the members of Toto, who were probably the tightest band on the planet next to the lineups Steely Dan or Miles Davis would assemble).

That being said, I'd probably be sick of him too if I was a kid in '82-'83, considering how much his music saturated the radio back in the early 80's. Phil Collins and Genesis had the same problem a few years later in the second half of the decade.

Thriller was Jackson's sixth album though, and he was about a decade and half into his career when he made it. When he was at the stage of his career that Bieber is at now, he did have a lot of help.

Well yeah, everyone has to start somewhere. The only guy who was a fully fledged songwriting genius from the first solo album onward that I know of was Todd Rundgren, but he's kind of a special case. I don't know if we'll get anything as good as Thriller from Bieber in his lifetime, but with more experience and some good songwriting confidence...well, who knows right?

Anyway, he said that he hated Michael Jackson, and that just made no sense to me, so I asked him why and he said that when he was a kid he was like hugely into the Clash and velvet underground, and he said, "It would be like if 50 years from now and Jistin Bieber was really popular, and people would be wondering why you (me) are not a Jistin Bieber fan."

I told him that was an absurd analogy because there is a huge difference in talent between the two, but maybe I don't understand because I wasn't born in the 70s. He said Michael Jackson was too pop-y for him among the sounds of the Ramones and the Clash, and the fact that people played Michael Jackson all the time didn't help him out either.
Hate Jacko for drivel he released in the 80s and thereafter or hated him because of the press he got in the 90s and all that entails? Either way, it make sense your brother does.

Since we are talking about Jackson again and I just gave Off The Wall a listen, I will just say Off The Wall >>>>>>>>>>> anything else he's done.

I don't hate Jackson or anything, but I just can't get into 80's pop. The synths are just too cheesy, lame, dated, etc. I love some of Madonna's work, but her eighties material is godawful to my ears. I can't really get into her before Erotica, which is one of the best pop albums ever recorded.

Kylie Minogue >>> Madonna

^I disagree, Madonna's earlier days were better. Her older music had a really fun-time young girl vibe with a hint of sexy, it seems her later stuff was an attempt to prove how intimidatingly attractive she was.
