I'm all too aware of people judging music by technical ability, goes back to the classic rock fans i was talking about in that other thread.

Anyways, i have a possibly unpopular opinion:
Heathen by Bowie is a brilliant album. Yeaaah.

I feel bad for the Gary Yudman (the MC who talks at the beginning of Is There Anybody Out There, The Wall Live 1980-81). I mean, he's trying to point out one more thing - and the band doesn't even let him finish before they start In The Flesh? ! Then, they add insult to injury and they mock him during the other In The Flesh! Poor guy, just trying to do his job.

The reason that's unpopular is because most people laugh at him.

They do sound pretty much the same. Interpol sounds like the Strokes mixed with Joy Division.

Are you joking with this ****? You don't think guitar distortion and bass can be measured?

All of those things could be inserted into music mechanically.
And who programs that machine to produce the sound?

They have nothing to do with "motivation or passion" at all.
An electric guitar is a machine, a synthasizer is a machine. Just because the synth is programmed doesn't devalue the effect of the produced sound.

What you don't seem to understand is that any criteria you bring up in this regard is, when all's said and done, completely subjective, and NOT a "tangible fact" in any way, shape or form.
Exept for the part in which you can actually measure it and objectively conclude that one sound is 'weaker' than the other.

Itsy bitsy spider Vs. Beethoven.

As long as a criteria itself is left open to dispute, any judgments resulting from it are opinions...not facts.
If someone disputes the Earth being round it's no longer a fact just because they are stubborn morons?

Quote:
If you want to talk The Beatles specifically, then even by your own criteria you falter. There's more experimentation with "layering of orchestral sound" on Sgt Pepper than on anything in the useless Godsmack catalogue, and as for general layering of sound, counterpoint and interplay between multiple parts, there's more sophistication even as early as their 1966 album Revolver than on anything in Numetal. If you want to talk experimentation with guitar distortion, there's The Beatles (1968), complex bass lines, then Abbey Road, and there's loads of playing around with rhythm and time signature on their last two albums. They were generally quite overtly ARTY in fact during their final years. Go listen to the schizophrenic nightmare of I Am The Walrus, for example.
I could probably give you more experimentaion and variety on a single Oomph album than in the Beatles entire catalogue. Oomph uses more layers of complex synthesized bass, treble, ambeince, guitar riffs and drum beats in a single song than the beatles have exhibited in thier lifetime.

As far as Godsmack is concerned, they don't have as much variety as the Beatles but that doesn't mean they have no variety. They have straight forward alternative metal, acoutstic, tribal drumming, vocal ballads (the songs 'Serenity' and "hollow")

That said, the beatles are just different shades of the same suck. Varied lameness is still lame.

Quote:
The Beatles didn't even invent most of the ideas they played around with and yet they were WAY more wildly adventurous and eclectic than pretty much any metal band I've ever heard.
See above.

You've clearly either NOT listened to their four albums that matter,
Except I have all four and the acoustic EP

Quote:
or you have but just know very, shamefully little about rock history and music theory. Probably both. Either way, go learn about the origins of rock and what bands were actually trying to DO, and you'll benefit for sure.
False dichotomy

Quote:
At any rate, since when was "lame" defined as lacking in motivation or passion?
3. weak; inadequate; unsatisfactory; clumsy: a lame excuse.
4. Slang. out of touch with modern fads or trends; unsophisticated.

Take into account def. 4, which I never brought up until now. Beatles = lame.

Quote:
Far as I'm concerned, a piece of pop trash like "Unbrake My Heart" sung by Toni Braxton has more tangible "motivation and passion" in it than any garbage by insipid, cliched, generic numetal bands like Godsmack.

I have nothing against soul music, not my cup of tea but still more passionate that ****ty pop trash.

Also:
Nu Metal = Hip hop inspired metal.
Linkin Park = Nu Metal
Godsmack = Post-grunge, alternative metal.
Godsmack =/= hip hop inspired
Godsmack =/= Nu Metal

Oomph! you can't compare Godsmack to the Beatles any more than you can compare Itsy Bitsy Spider to Beethoven. They're different bands aimed at different audiences.

Itsy Bitsy Spider is a child song, and it does its job well.

Beethoven composed symphonies, and he did his job well. But a symphony is not a child song any more than a child song is not a symphony.

Do you see where I'm going with this? Why are you trying to compare the Beatles, a band in the sixties whose fanbase was more or less screaming teenage girls, with Godsmack, a hard rock band who claims Alice in Chains as one of their inspirations?
