Not if its preference.

Even though I live very close to Memphis, I can easly say that I'm a proud non-fan of Soul. Probably because I was so overexposed to it when I was little, I grew out of it.

Lists are boring , Do I really need someone else telling me Led Zeppelin are the best band in the world ?

If you want to make this list interesting then at least add an explanation to every number saying why each band is where they are. At least put up something to debate rather than just writing down a load of bands.

Correction.

Before Elvis there were Rock N Roll artists people didn't listen to because they were black.

Hey boo boo,

As for as you saying those bands are ranked where they are because of my personal taste, you are correct with the exception of those from 51 on. 51-100 is just in random order as other bands I am considering. Still I think strong arguments can be made for the positions I put a lot of bands them in. For example:

Metallica has 100 million records sold from 11 platinum albums and has won 7 Grammys. Few if any bands of the last 25 years can rival that roster; in addition they were groundbreaking in their genre and still make music (though poorly imo) today. I hardly think 17 is too high.

Similar argument for #15 Green Day. Since 1993 they have been the most recognizable punk rock & roll band in the world and have garnered numerous awards including for the most recent and excellent Rock Opera style American Idiot album which was the most popular and among the best of the year.

Incubus is an excellent band but I few their albums are getting progressively worse. I don't even have a single song on my I pod from their latest effort. Still Science is outstanding and on the whole I can listen to each album end to end without skipping a track.

Do have any suggestions for other criteria. I of course realize all criteria are flawed that's why I want to have several so that the margin of error is reduced. The list is a work in progress, thanks for your insight and please continue to opine.

i'm really quite confused.

Is this just his top 50?
or the top 50 of all time, regardless of personal preference?

I just don't see your logic for the placement of some bands. I wouldn't have Zep at number 1 even though I'm the biggest Zep fan here. The greatest rock band is The Beatles, theres no debating that, really.

Toto have won 6 Grammys, Pink Floyd only have 1.

The Grammys are not what I would call a valid source.

Still, there are many bands with greater influence and impact.

And having Yes below Stone Temple Pilots is just ridiculous.

I'm a fan of the concept album. I wouldn't say American Idiot is up there. If I want a kickass rock opera, I'll listen to Tommy, The Wall, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway or The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Or even more obscure albums like Three Friends (Gentle Giant), Remember The Future (Nektar), The Snow Goose (Camel) and Lizard (King Crimson).

Hell, AI is not even the best concept punk album. Husker Du's Zen Arcade, Crass's Penis Envy and Mike Watts Contemplating The Engine Room all pwn American Idiot IMO.

I have every album, I rate them as so.

Morning View
S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
Crow Left Of The Murder
Fungus Amongus
Make Yourself

"Big gap"

Light Grenades

That one was a huge let down. I think they are getting to a stage similar to Pink Floyd circa 1977, where its becoming more about Brandon Boyd than the band. Ben Kenney as a bassist dosen't stand out at all, compared to the prowess of his much superior predecessor. And DJ Killmore dosen't even do anything anymore. And guitarist Mike Einziger hides his talents too much.

If you want to make an efficient greatest artists list (good luck, lol) then you will need to put preference aside. I'd also add impact, influence and maybe innovation to the criteria, and replace the term "technical skill" with "talent", because its a more vague (if more subjective) term. And while I wouldn't eradicate popularity from the criteria completely, I wouldn't put as much emphasis on it.

I think whats missing in this list for me is the personal touch.

Every music fan likes albums by bands they think should have been huge but for whatever reason it never happened for. Or bands you saw when you were 15 in some small ****ty club who went on to have a bit of success that you still have a soft spot for.

Your list doesn't seem to take any of that sort of thing into account and it's those sort of things that make these type of lists interesting.
