Brand New
 Brand New with each release have shown notable maturing. While they started a "pop-punk/emo" band (and have never been able to shake the tag) they've turned into a different all together with the release of The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me and the leaked Fight Off Your Demon demos. Showing obvious influences from hardcore, Modest Mouse, and Morrissey. Brand New have proven to be a dynamic alternative rock band. 1. Jesus 2. Untitled 02 3. You Won't Know 4. Millstone 5. Modest Mouse
 Modest Mouse's biggest influences are Built to Spill and Pixies. It's kind of difficult to describe them, the best I can think of is uber sexy sea shanty garageish alternative rock. 1. 3rd Planet 2. Okkervil River
 Texas alt-country/folk rock band Okkervil River aren't a very happy band, singing about rape, hookers, murder, broken hearts, movies, and dead dogs they have a strangely real feel about them. When frontman/songwriter Will Sheff belts out a line like "We went out one night and took a flashlight out with these two girls Colin knew from Kenwood Christian / One was named Laurie, that’s what the story said next week in the Guardian / And when I killed her it was so easy that I wanted to kill her again." with such sincerity there's something disturbingly believable about it. The Smiths
 The Smiths are considered to be one of the most important bands of the 80s and honestly I consider them to be the best. Hailing from Manchester they were a refreshing sound in the 80s being guitar rock as opposed to being electronic based like alot of other acts going on. Fronted by charismatic singer Morrissey who wrote about a variety of topics from love and loss to the moors murders and England. He idolized Oscar Wilde and James Dean and was a fantastic vocalist not just because he has a great voice but because of how distinct it was, no one sounds like Morrissey. Lyrically hes one of my favorite songwriters, writing about anything from love and loss to the moors murders and England. You can tell he means it when he angrily spits out a line like "I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving / England is mine and it owes me a living / Ask me why and I'll spit in your eye." and you can also feel the pain and sincerity when he sings "When you laugh about people who feel so very lonely / Their only desire is to die / Well, I'm afraid it doesn't make me smile / I wish I could laugh but that joke isn't funny anymore / It's too close to home and it's too near the bone." Morrissey's sincerity and ability to rattle the cage and heart are something rarely seen. Also in the Smiths line up was guitarist Johnny Marr who has worked with artists such as The The and is currently playing in Modest Mouse. He's one of alternative rock's finest guitarist. His tone in the Smiths was unique and defining and refreshing. The other two often unmentioned members were Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, while obviously it's hard to stand next to Morrissey and Johnny Marr I think they did an excellent job. Andy Rourke is one of my favorite bassists. I think my favorite is his basswork in Girlfriend In A Coma. Mike Joyce's drumming did exactly what it was supposed to, he was an extremely competent drummer. 1. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now 2. Ask 3. Panic 4. The Boy with the Thorn in His Side 5. Phil Ochs
 60s protest singer/folk artists Phil Ochs much like Pete Seeger remains largely under the radar while people are quick to name Bob Dylan and sometimes Woody Guthrie they usually can't go much beyond it despite their being a plethora of folkies around at that time. Phil Ochs wrote alot of songs that would become folk classics, most notable Power and Glory, Outside of a Small Circle of Friends, Love Me I'm a Liberal and I Ain't Marching Anymore. 1. Bright Eyes
 Bright Eye's frontman Conor Oberst cites Simon Joyner to be his biggest influence other influences include Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zant and Daniel Johnston. Bright Eyes has done alot of things, starting out lo-fi folk they jumped into alt-country, folktronica, and so on. Elliott Smith
 Elliott Smith is one of the most important figures in recent indie music. Influencing everyone from Conor Oberst to Emily Haines it's easy to find some trace of his sound in alot of recent acts. I consider him to be one of the best singer/songwriters of the past decade. He left behind an acclaimed body of work and a catalogue of material never released but that is steadily being leaked to the public through various sites and post-humus releases such as New Moon and From a Basement on the Hill. His biggest influence was the Beatles, but it's kind of difficult to compare him to them. Elliott's career was a constant growth, starting out lo-fi folk he advanced to a more full acoustic driven sound to baroque pop and eventually to experimental indie tracks. When listening to his later tracks (the basement era stuff) you some brilliantly done tracks, songs like Twilight and True Love show him having perfected his acoustic sound and tracks like King's Crossing which show his experimental side and when listening to that stuff yuo have to wonder just what he could've been. 1.
