Power pop is a genre I will almost always like, but rarely dive headlong into. I think this album might be changing that. Lovely buzzing melodies, but honestly, I don't know why Neko Case doesn't sing the whole thing - she kills every track she's on. Three or Four is the standout track at the moment. |

As for what I'm digging today... Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline http://img.noiset.com/images/album/b...ver-12819.jpeg My new favourite Dylan album (although I'll probably start saying Time Out Of Mind again this time tomorrow). Among the first bona fide country rock albums, and definitely among the best too (I Threw It All Away ). If only it weren't so bloody short. |
Ambulance - Curse of Vale Do Lobo
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg Brilliant! |
Kayo Dot - Coyote
http://www.metalkingdom.net/album/img/d29/26728.jpg Serious 'album of the year' material. One listen in and I'm more mesmerized than I ever was by 'Choirs of the Eye'. |

I love what goes on in this album. I listened to it in 2 halves and it's brilliant. The vocal work is tremendous. |
Bit of a shame how Garrett pulled the plug and went on to make a mockery of everything the Oils stood for in politics, but I guess all good things come to an end eh.
I'm still kinda mad with Garrett over that... while i can't deny anyone the right to get older and shift their values, it's so hard to watch and read about him working for the Government he once vehemently fought against on so many pressing, concerning issues... I know that sometimes he sincerely must not believe what his party spits out, and sometimes it's hard to watch your childhood / teenage hero toe the party line. Perhaps he has a bigger picture / scheme / idea in mind? Perhaps he now wants to try to change everything from the inside - i'll admit that with my disappointment comes some sort of faith in him still... he seems to sincere a man to just sell out for power. |

Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape Never have I been so impressed on a first listen for a black metal album. I have Anteater to thank for this beauty. Cheers! |

Bob Dylan - Slow Train Coming http://diskoduck.cz/shop/images/4564.jpg The first of what would be many of Dylan's Christian-themed albums. It's all very nice his standing up for his beliefs in musical form and all that, but bloody hell does it sound corny. Musically though, this is a pretty good album. |

although if you love how they composed their music/played the most, then you'd love some of the older stuff. |

^ If you want to explore Mastodon, I'd work backwards if I were you. They started as an Grindcore/Hardcore/Sludge metal band. If you like Blood Mountain, then you'll probably like everything else they did.

Re: Mastodon, I never heard any grindcore in their sound, but sludge yeah. As has been said, if you really like Crack the Skye then the best thing to do is work backwards so you'll adjust to the sound. It's true the vocals on Crack the Skye are considerably more accessible than before. I really like all 4 of their albums, with Leviathan probably being my favorite.
|
^If you want to hear them grind. Bear in mind they've never been a pure grindcore band, but they really have a lot of grindcore parts on this compilation of early tracks. What's great about Mastodon is they mix up a lot of influences, and it's impossible to call them any specific type of metal band. There's also fair amount of mathcore in the mix.

^ Yeah I haven't heard that one, only the proper albums.

The Heliocentrics - Out There
Organic trip-hop, jazz fusion, Post rock, Hip-hop, pseudo-Dixieland jazz? Uh...yeah. Out There is quite a difficult album to pigeon hole into a genre, aside from the catchall tag that post-rock lends itself to be sometimes. Perhaps a better description of The Heliocentric's brilliance is to note that they served as DJ Shadow's back up band for a few of his tours, and you can definitely hear his influence as well on the album. Whatever you wanna' call it, I'm diggin' it pretty hard. http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/10842-out-there.jpg Thievery Corporation - The Outernational Sound OK, it's not really a Thievery Corporation album in the sense that it's original music created by the duo themselves. The Outernational Sound is actually more of a mix-tape, a 'DJ session' as the CD cover suggests, compiled by Garza and Hilton. Having said that, It's an amazing album regardless. Ironically it retains the duo's signature vibe. I've seen 'party mixes' released as albums under the clout of the name of famous electronic artists before. The more notable example I can think of is Nightmares on Wax's Coming Home, which is also quite good. If you can get past the fact that it's a Thievery Corporation album in name only, I think any TC fan would be more than pleased with it. http://funkyjeff77.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/th.jpg |
Been meaning to check out that Heliocentrics album for some time, haven't gotten around to it.
I kinda stopped listening to Thievery Corporation about a decade ago, but one album I really enjoyed (and probably the first thing of theirs I ever heard) is Abductions and Reconstructions which is a collection of remixes they've done. IT works really well with a similar vibe throughout. Their DJ Kicks from 1999 is another release compiling other artists' tracks (not remixed this time, so it's more like the one you posted). |
So bloody amazing just fantastic really underated

Ya know, I never actually thought it would happen, but I actually really, really enjoyed the heck out of Muse's The resistance today while i was running errands in my car... that suprised me! I thought I'd like it but I had no idea i'd be so impressed with it!

Ratatat - LP4
I've been looking forward to this album for a while now and upon first listen it definitely does not disappoint. Don't listen to the naysayers complaining it sounds too much like LP3. It's a really solid album that's worth checking out. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...IL._SS500_.jpg |
