I also didn't realize until now that he's a member of the Coltrane family. Some of them play on this album and it makes FLs sound (here and on old suff) feel even more legit. A jazz background explains a lot of it.

Hmm, I did not know that.

Yeah, if you have the CD then you can see the credits. I read somewhere (can't remember where) that FL is the nephew of Alice Coltrane, the Jazz harpist who was John Coltrane's second wife. They had several children one of whom is Ravi Coltrane (FL's cousin?), saxophonist, who plays on the new FL track 'Arkestry'

Also you can see that track 15, 'Drips', features a guest artist called 'Auntie's Harp' so my assumption is that 70-something Alice Coltrane plays on this song.

Bulldog 05-07-2010 07:21 AM

This is a good album, to hell with the haters :D

Not exactly brilliant as there is the odd dud here and there, but otherwise this is a great album of classic country covers, all of which are given a real friendly warmth by Ringo's croon. Something I'd recommend to anyone who's ever thought about giving country a try and's willing to forgive Ringo the joke that is the rest of his solo career.

Cool. Yeah I have the CD but I only skimmed through all the credits/copy. I read the Pitchfork review yesterday and they mentioned his relation to Coltrane...maybe that's where you read it?

Treat - Coup de Grace (2010)

A recent dig of mine. 18 years after their last album, one of Sweden's more talented 80's AOR ensembles has constructed the catchiest melodic rock album I've heard this year. Top notch production, blistering guitar and fantastic vocals up the wazoo..basically just loads of fun for anyone who might be looking for an 80's rawk-fix tonight.

Bulldog 05-07-2010 01:12 PM

So, yeah, all that Ringo-ness earlier's gone and got me on a bit of a country kick, so out have come a few of the old favourites. Clockwise from the top-left; Sweetheart Of the Rodeo by the Byrds, the Desert Rose Band's self-titled debut, Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline and Emmylou Harris' Elite Hotel.

sidewinder 05-07-2010 05:02 PM

It's an instrumental hip-hop day up in this piece, and among others, I've been enjoying these albums.

P-Love - ...All Up in Your Mind
Released in 2005 on Sixtoo's label Bully Records, and possibly recorded partly using equipment belonging to Amon Tobin. A very chill and organic album belonging as much to indie electronic as to hip-hop, partly due to the use of live instruments...it almost feels like post-rock at times. A little-known gem that I enjoy immensely every time I come back to it.

http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image....L._AA300_.jpg

Dimlite - This is Embracing
Swiss beat maker Dimitri Grimm's second album on the German Sonar Kollektiv label, from 2006. Pretty downtempo yet upbeat and fun. Some vocal samples here and there, a guest MC or two, a bit of jazz, some live instruments as well of course. Some ideas that run through much of today's instrumental hip-hop and "wonk" can be found here...in 2006 and his 2005 debut. Though he himself is obviously influenced by Prefuse 73.

Dimlite - Prismic Tops
His latest 8-track 45-minute EP from this year, this time on Stone's Throw sister label Now-Again Records. A bit different from his first two albums, a bit more wonky/twisted and he even sings on some tracks but it's well distorted and fun. A lady named Elan Tamara sings on the song 'On The Same Picture' and I quite like it.

Just finished a second listen, and while I agree with you that it is pretty good I still think This Is Embracing outshines it. I have a sneaking feeling that this is a bit of a grower though, so we'll see. Good to see some Dimlite love on the boards.

Indeed!

It is most definitely a grower. I liked it at first, but like it more after about 5-6 listens now. I agree with you that This is Embracing is better, and maybe even his first one, Runbox Weathers, but the EP is a more manageable length so it gets points for that. It's a bit of a different direction, and I'm curious where he'll go from here. Hopefully he's got an LP in the works since that's technically an EP (some places call it an album, some an EP...so who knows).

I steer clear of Pitchfork reviews so I'm sure I didn't read it there. Really, I didn't want to read anything about the album until I heard it but I got curious and started looking. I skimmed one or two other reviews

Oh, and I've been digging this since yesterday: The new Caribou album, Swim. It's a lot less pop driven than Andorra (an improvement to me)

TheFolkslave 05-07-2010 07:13 PM

Some of the albums I've been digging this week:

Sigur Rós - ( )
http://www.tunefilter.com/2002/%28%29.jpg

Nevermore - The Obsidian Conspiracy (2010)

Sometimes I dislike grabbing leaks because if the album sucks then I feel a big let down, especially when it's albums that I'm greatly anticipating. Luckily this is Nevermore we're talking about and they haven't released a bad album since their debut. The Obsidian Conspiracy is exactly what I want from Nevermore, heavy, melodic, amazing production, and Warrel Dane's powerhouse vocals. Anybody who has ever curled their inner fingers inwards while extending their other two NEED to get this album.

The Blood of Heroes - The Blood of Heroes (2010)

This was an album I grabbed solely based around the cover art. I knew nothing about the band, who was in it, what style of music the play, etc. I was quite surprised when it was an eclectic blend of reggaecore, industrial, experimental, and d&b. Usually with that many different conflicting styles I'd expect the album to feel inconsistent or schizophrenic but the band manage to fuse them all together into a style that is both unique and captivating. I threw this album on last night while writing my final essay for my English class and it just clicked so well. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who likes weird, eclectic stuff.

I guess I'm surprised at how little I play this album. I haven't put it on all the way through for a while, and all the songs are just coming off as really fresh and beautiful to this day. It might be in my top three Radiohead albums.

My favourite Dylan album by some distance this. My mind changes a lot about that, but then I always come back to putting this one on the pedestal again. Such a gloomy, eerie kinda vibe to this one, and another one of my favourite night-listening albums.

Some great Aussie stuff tonight for my thirsty ears... in the form of Bluebottle Kiss's "Patient" album.... freaking great songwriting, passionate singing / playing and just a great dirty feel make this album a must, an album i should have dragged out earlier than this!

The new MGMT album "congradulations". As a whole it's better than their last album. I also cannot stop listening to The Get up Kids new Ep "Simple Sience", great Ep fpr a 5 year break up.

Currently listening to... Latvian lovers by a band called Not from There... they're Aussie, again, but I really haven't heard anything from them since this, so i really don't even know if they are even around anymore... all i know is that I like this album lots... :-)

Martina Topley-Bird - Quixotic

Stunning trip-hop tinged pop. Martina was the vocalist from Tricky...she definitely seems to know what she is doing on her own as well.

Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead (2006)

Amazing avant-garde metal album with cabaret influences. Dominique Lenore Persi does a great job alternating between clean and harsher vocals and she plays a god damn accordion. They really need to come out with a new album...

Bulldog 05-10-2010 10:56 AM

RE my Dylan binge of late, this here's one of his 90s album of traditional folk covers, and it's nowhere near as dull as I thought it'd be. I'd even go as far as saying it's quite a good album. Wonderful guitar-work throughout. I love getting the odd musical pleasant surprise like this every now and then.

Shipping News - Flies the Fields

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Ahh yes, this album is so good and really their best IMO. The band was formed by Jeff Mueller and Jason Noble (both formerly of Rodan, with Jeff later in June of 44 and Jason later in Rachel's). If you like Slint and any of those bands, I suggest you check this out.

Spiderland - Slint

I used to always look at it as really overrated but after finally giving it a couple more listens I'm starting to really get into it, and with that I've been getting back into math rock.

Cool which one did you get? The only one I don't like is Anahata. Though I suppose it could grow on me, it's just a big departure from their sound.

Great album. It was recommended to me about a year ago and it's stayed in regular rotation on my Zune. She really does have a sweet voice.

Currently, I'm digging this album:

Z.Z. Hill - The Down Home Soul of Z.Z. Hill

Lately I've really been craving alot of soul and blues music, so a friend of mine sent me a link to this RYM list of Southern Soul albums. Some fantastic finds there, and that's where I found Z.Z. Hill. This isn't the album that was on the list, but I'm extremely pleased with the one I found. Soul and blues pretty much overlap most of the time, and I think this album is great example of both sounds coming together. Plus, he's from Texas, and I do like to give props to artists from home.

Have a listen if ya care to. There aren't necessarily the best songs on the album, but youtube is limited.
