In Rainbows - Radiohead

Full of Radiohead - ish goodness and perfect for the unwinding listen that I required tonight... dunno what I am going to play next though...

Possibly the finest "Dad-rock" album ever made.

Yeah, it's a good 'un eh. I'll admit I only ever really listen to the first half of it these days, but it's worth having for 10th Avenue Freeze-Out alone.

And talking of Dad-rock...

One of many reasons why ex-Byrd Chris Hillman's easily among my favourite musicians, singers and songwriters. This is his debut as the Desert Rose Band - his project with a certain Herb Pedersen. So catchy it's almost unreal, and an album I still refuse to get bored of after about 3 or 4 months of virtually constant listening.

Great post-rock album. Listened to this when I took a walk yesterday. It was awesome to listen to this since it was warm and the sun was setting.

This is a new project consisting of Jack Dangers from Meat Beat Manifesto and Jon Drukman from Bass Kittens and it's pretty frickin awesome. No way a fan of MBM would be disappointed in this. I'm not familiar with BK so I don't know what influence he has brought, but apparently he's more of a digital guy where as Jack Dangers of MBM is more into analog equipment...so I guess it's a mix of the two. This is my third listen and I suppose while thinking about it, I can hear it. Nice vocal samples in the style of MBM too (only complaint is that a couple are reused from MBM songs).

A truer statement has never been stated, I kind of feel that way about all folk punk.

Generally I think folk singer/songwriters should be subject to a great scourging. Well, the pseudo following-in-Nick-Drake's-footsteps folk lite that seems to be everywhere these days like some kind of biblical pestilence.

That said I picked up The Tallest Man On Earth's recent 'Wild Hunt' album and I'm really "digging" it. Since I had no experience of this particular artist it was a nice little find. His voice may divide opinion though as it is hardly pretty but if you can get past that the quality of songwriting is very good.

Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

I am hopelessly addicted to this album. Julie Christmas' voice is amazing. I'd normally try to describe albums I dig myself but I don't think I can put it in better words than this:

Quote:

The album takes off with the epic The lamb and the Labrador, setting the tone for a very dark and grim album. Productionwise the music has a lot in common with the typical Neurosis sound. The riffing and dynamics are complex and sometimes painfully slow. Christmas’s signature vocals do set Battle Of Mice apart from other bands in this genre and I think her vocal range on this record is more diverse than the screeching and sreaming she does with Made Out Of Babies: from spoken word passages to hysterical screams and intense whispering, Julie’s vocal abilities are profound. Her lyrical skills work perfectly with the atmospheric sound of the band and reflect a very honest, sometimes frightening personal insight.

A day of nights is the result of a musical and epic journey that reflects the dysfunctioning of a relationship doomed from the beginning. In the end Battle Of Mice retain the epic grandeur of Red Sparowes while throwing in a primal range of emotions like angst, paranoia and blind rage, a feature akin to bands like Neurosis and I kind of think that’s interesting to say the least. An impressive debut album from a band that is recommended.
Do yourself a favor and check it out.

First time I've listened to this for quite a while. Uses just about every trick in the book when it comes to having a stab at the commercial market in the early 80s so, yeah, the majority of it's pretty rubbish. 3 or 4 songs on it are among my favourites though, so it's worth having for those.

Bulldog! Been meaning to ask you for a while, best Elvis Costello album(s) to start with? He has too many and I can't pick one :(

Yeah, he's been hella prolific down the years. As it happens, I'm making a beginner's guide mix for him as I type this, but there are four albums of his I'd call wall-to-wall, 10/10 classics myself;

Get Happy
Trust
Imperial Bedroom
Spike

And plenty more perfectly good albums as well. It's probably best to work your way towards those four by getting hold of My Aim Is True, This Year's Model or Armed Forces first though, particularly regarding the bottom two (which are pretty difficult albums).

Needless to say, if you have any trouble finding any albums, just give us a shout and I'll see what I can arrange!

I knew you'd come up with the goods :D I just hope I take to him, I don't really know what his sound is. I just heard 'pub rock' not entirely sure what that means. It just reminds me of lad rock.. pub rock = drunken sing-alongs?

Get Happy, Trust, Imperial Bedroom, Spike.. Hmm decisions decisions!

I guess his earliest stuff sounds a little bit like pub rock. Not much so though. If you wanna start with any of those four albums, I say go for Trust or Get Happy first. The other two are a bit much for the first-timer.

I'll PM you a link to get you started fairly shortly...

I went for Trust, second track in. Thanks :D but I'm listening to them on Spotify so I won't need a link, unless I decide I really like and then I'll get some of his stuff into my iTunes.
