Nightlands - I Can Feel The Night Around Me (2017)

A modern, somewhat acidic take on lite prog and 70's Californian pop-rock from the dude who fronts The War On Drugs. If the idea of Pink Floyd, Toro y Moi, The Beach Boys and Ambrosia hopping into a blender and coming out as the score to a sequel to David Lynch's Blue Velvet sounds appealing, this will be your AOTY.

2 for 2 my dude. Listening to this now. Right out of the gate this album has grabbed me and won't let go.

Wish I could say the same. Love War on Drugs though so I'm a bit disappointed. First track was really promising too but it just sounds like a boring version of Porcupine Tree with little Beach Boys flairs.

Might as well put on an Eagles record

I'm closer to your camp than Tristan's. The War on Drugs have yet to really capture me with any of their material.

Because there is a lot of interesting aspects to the composition and production. The War on Drugs simply don't have the same energy. I totally see the appeal though. I won't knock anyone who likes them or the band itself.

EDIT: Also the melodies on this album are so damn infectious. I'm loving this.

This record is the definition of bland, I don't hear what you're hearing I guess but I kinda wish I got the appeal. It's nice and relaxed, sure. But not interesting imo.

Fair enough. Could be a grower, I don't really know though. Maybe I'll calm down on it with subsequent listens. Only time will tell.

Maybe I'll like it more too if I ever revisit it. Solid 6/10 though.

It is an interesting album. But I'm a production snob and so what draws me into an album is different than someone else. I love the atmosphere it has and some of the songs have a great psychedelic feeling too. Maybe I don't take music seriously enough?

To me, melody and the subtle details are king above all things. And "bland" to me is Nickelback or Ace Of Base or Lenny Kravitz. Even someone who doesn't like Nightlands can hear the work he's put into it.
