Well I can say one thing for sure about the Newsom album...I ****ing love that album cover
|
I'm not really impressed with Divers after my first listen, but I didn't really like the single after my first listen either.
I think topping Ys will be hard (ever). |
It's not available on Spotify so I'm SOL on hearing it.
|
I'm really in love with the Dire Straits-Dire Straits (1978) studio album at the moment. An all time favourite.

Frog - Kind of Blah VERY interesting album. Has this sort of Animal Collective spastic sound but can also get very quiet and folky almost like a Mount Eerie song. Definitely a cool find. Below is a good example of both styles on this album... ^This song kind of reminds me of Steppenwolf's "Goodbye Stranger". Anybody else? |

Beach House - Thank Your Lucky Starts This is leagues better than Depression Cherry. I'm sure it's the lack of reverb that dragged them down with their last one, but here the productions much cleaner and I think it ranks with Bloom and Teen Dream, records they actually used their reverb for good. |

What a f*cking album. Edit From Exo : The Album is Magnolia Electric Co. by Songs:Ohia |

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006) For me at least, these guys are one of those special groups that have a completely distinct sound (though not all of these are necessarily great bands). You just can't hear an Arctic Monkeys song and mistake them for one of their peers. When the first song on your album is 'The View From The Afternoon', you're doing something right. |

Fuzz - II (2015) Totally rad, man. The best Black Sabbath album since 1972. |

Ive never been bothered listening to a full Arctic Monkeys album. Knowing my taste, am I missing much?
Lately Ive been liking this quite a bit: http://frontpsych.com/wp-content/upl...lbum-cover.jpg Shrines by Purity Ring I remember liking this enough when it came out but never really came back to it much. Came back to it for no real reason a couple days ago and here I am again listening to it. Doubt id be able to stand it all the time, but for now, it's perfect. |

Earthside - A Dream In Static (2015) Atmospheric metal project several years in the making. Has a great mix of instrumental cuts and vocal ones with some absolute allstars (Daniel Tompkins from TesseracT, Lajon Witherspoon from Sevendust, Bjorn Strid from Soilwork and Eric Zirlinger from Face The King). There's a helluva lot of variety here too, including post-rock, sludge, some huge orchestral cinematics and a fair dose of catchy modern prog. metal too. One of my favorites of the year so far! |

Actually, come to think of it this album has everything working against it for most folks (I.E; Country, Christian themes) and yet it generally gets positive reviews. |
There, that wasn't so hard now was it?

Leave Tweedy alone.

Really liking this house/electropop album by Bob Moses.

Charisma.com - OLest [EP] (2015) Another solid to great release from these guys. More house/hip hop elements included compared to previous releases, and I'm digging it. There's also a few late 90's feeling pop tunes on here. This all over the place. |

The Weeknd - Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) At first I was really just digging the singles off this. The other songs were pretty good but didn't really grab me. Now that I've listened to it several more times I can honestly say that this is right up there with the best albums of the year and one of the best R&B records I have ever heard. So fucking lush. |

Annabel (Lee) - If Music Presents: By the Sea and Other Places (2015) This is an incredible record and a contender for AOTY. A lush mix of jazz, classical, ambient music, electronics that makes its own monster. The vocalist reminds me quite a bit of Dorothy Moskowitz of The United States of America. Highly recommended to everybody. |

Gregory Alan Isakov -The Empty Northen Hemisphere I just totally love this album. This guy puts heart and soul into all of this music, but this one is the best! I also love the cover! |

Blue Sky Black Death & Jean Grae - The Evil Jeanius (2008) I'm about half way through and it has been a thoroughly glorious experience. Amazing production with choice samples, great rapping all around and an overall gorgeous vibe. I think this might be a new favourite. |

Bill Orcutt & Jacob Felix Heule - Colonial Donuts Some solid clunky free improvisation with Orcutt's trademark style. This is a pretty enjoyable and off the wall record, but it's definitely not for everyone. We can't all have good taste or else the term would become meaningless. |

Best album I've listened to maybe this year? Very close anyway. Thanks bob! :thumb: http://cdn.discogs.com/UAPAXo4uC8znl...-9988.jpeg.jpg The Door Behind the Door --- The Black Ryder |
So while listening to Toyah Wilcox through youtube, they randomly threw a song I thought "hmmm....that doesn't sound like Toyah....however its freaking awesome!" that song was "Eighth day" by Hazel O'Connor.
I then found the album it is on which it is all part of a film called Breaking Glass starring the band members and Hazel (I have no clue about it really.) however the album is occupying my time as I just want to keep listening to it. It has a very punk feeling back to it with a synth front....while THERE IS A SAXOPHONE SOLOS AS GLUE! So just that alone has alot going on, not to mention Hazel's sarcastic eccentric "Cockney Rebel" kind of singing. First song "Writing on the wall" has a bit of a more pop feel with the synth yet some nice proper rock outside of it and the like most of the songs is angry meaning full lyrics. Next "Monsters in Disguise" another angry punk like singing with synth and rock as the background, yet in a different way that hazel's sarcastic tones is complimented even more. "Come into the Air" is a nice airy almost Kate Bush like synth song of passion. The next song "Big Brother" returns to the angry satire filled less punk rock and more rock even scaling back the electronic yet allows for a great Adam and the Ants like chorus....if that make any sense? "Who needs it?" is a strange wonderful melody with synth, saxophone and an oboe! that slowly amps up to a great and quick chant all about nuclear weapons. Getting into a really nice blood pumping bounce like your at a rally chanting anti Nukes while stamping your feet all together, helps that the audio as if they just performed it in a club like that. Now we take a major turn with "Will you?" gone is the rock guitar and instead violins and again...the saxophone return to make a lovely melodic with drums and a keyboard providing chill out beats. If I had to really describe what it sounds like, it sounds like Kate Bush produced a Tori Amos song. "Eight day" is the song I first heard and its a wonderful Scifi punchy synth story of man's technological achievements and follys in the form of gods seven days. Hazel sounds the most different as if she so very deliberate in her words. A piano induced playful and mischievous tune that would fit well in a dream as it waves back and fourth, "Top of the Wheel" just take me there and lets it wash over me as Hazel disappointingly shouts/sings at me. Sounding like it should be a meaningful moment in a stage show musical "Calls a tune" has Hazel play with her fall in a more innocent way with a piano, drums and bass plodding along with her, as if its a moment of realisation for the "character". "Blackman" is another angry song however lacking any hint of punk instead proper prog rock backs and compliments as Hazel sort of saucily spits her lyrics in disdain for the well I supposed the best way to say it is "upper class" the better, she is the "black" she is the lower class, the dirty. Relay weirdly nice. "Give me an Inch" is a bouncy rocky synth tune and the sort you saw alot of on Top of the pops, I have a song like it on the tip of my tongue however cannot say it, you know what...despite the fact I found this in a Toyah Wilcox mix this might be the only song THAT ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE TOYAH! The last song on the Album is "If only" and it sounds like Hazel just sat a piano and played it out starting off sound alot like Tori Amos before returning to a deepish Hazel voice yet still carrying an overall Tori Amos of a hurt female voice. I cannot get enough of this Album it is just fantastic. |
