back in the early 2000's these guys here were ready to blow. they never did and almost vanished after it (a handful of guest appearances, a couple singles, a live album and then nothing until a reunion-album 10+ years later when none cared.

but this here is an absolutely great album, kinda ahead of its time. its el-p produced (same era as fantastic damage) and with great mc-ing by both of them. here's a sample if you care to give it a try

Opinions on the new King Gizzard? I am digging it, but I don't think it's anywhere near the level of their best stuff. Only four really good songs and the rest is meh.

Frownland 05-20-2019 01:09 PM

They take boogie rock in some interesting directions but apart from that it's painfully uninteresting.

I think we're saying the same thing. You talking about everything from Plastic Boogie to This Thing. Those were the only tracks I really liked. The rest was meh at best.

Frownland 05-20-2019 01:49 PM

Nah, I think it's an interesting direction but the songs don't really offer anything beyond that. I wouldn't call anything on the album good tbh. Wouldn't call any of it directly bad either. It's all just kind of middling once you look past the novelty of the genre exploration.

I feel this way about most of their work tbh, would love to see them live one day though, I bet they excel there.

Butthole Surfers don't get enough credit. They seem to be mostly remembered for Pepper (which is a good song) but not enough for their more experimental music.

the butthole surfers were an amazing band. although i m with those that think electric larryland (where pepper's included) could be their best album. i also like many of their oldest stuff of course:

Klangstof - Close Eyes To Exit

This is really ****ing good. A nice little mix of post-rock esque style instrumentals with some really nice vocals. Ive listened to this twice now and I love it.

The Batlord 06-02-2019 02:56 AM

So it's post-rock. You just described post-rock with vocals. Retch.

all of those are unassailable

and in their early days they were definitely one of the most horrifying live experiences in the history of rock’n’roll

He just don't like them cause they're like an experimental version of sludge metal.

Zwischen brings together twelve sound poetry collages using interview answers by public figures.
Each collage consists of the brief moments between the spoken words: silences, pauses for breath
and hesitations in which the interviewees utter non-semantic sound particles. These voice collages
also control a synthesizer, creating electronic sounds that overlay and merge with the voices to make
twelve acoustic structures.

^ That's a good choice - to my mind the best of his later albums. A couple of tracks have some great lyrics, and a couple of tracks have a playful charm that is rare in his discography.

The album before this was Time Out Of Mind, which won Dylan his first Grammy, but that album is too depressing and stark for repeated listening, imo. Not coincidental is the fact that the year TOOM was released, Dylan had a serious lung infection. My belief is that the award allocators said to themselves, "This guy's never won a Grammy - better give him one in case he dies soon."

Unrelenting, bombastic, proggy, punky, symphonic masterpiece that puts about 99.999% of other bands to shame. I've been aware of this album for a while but only recently went balls deep into it. Surprised it's not "mbcore" tbh.

Dr. John, the Night Tripper
Gris-Gris

Well, now I'm getting drunk and spinning my Dr.John records. his first and most important to my heart, Gris-Gris, is up first. Back when I was a kid I used to pick out a record at random from my dads collection and spin it. I picked this one out, without listening to it before, on Halloween based solely on the fact that the cover creeped me out. I stalked around the house dressed as Batman all goddamn night to this record. I just kept starting it over. People came over and were like...Dr. John? Really? Pop was just like, well, the kid likes it so I'm cool with that. The dude meant a lot to my growing up and I'll miss him. F*cking sucks I never made it to see him live. Damn shame.

RIP Doc.

The Batlord 06-06-2019 07:52 PM

Looking at that cover I can imagine he'd be tickled at scaring children on Halloween and then becoming their soundtrack.

I had heard of this, but never listened to it yet. I like it quite a lot, and it feels like a record that will get even better with repeated listening. Sad that he died :(
