Dr. John, the Night Tripper
Gris-Gris

Well, now I'm getting drunk and spinning my Dr.John records. his first and most important to my heart, Gris-Gris, is up first. Back when I was a kid I used to pick out a record at random from my dads collection and spin it. I picked this one out, without listening to it before, on Halloween based solely on the fact that the cover creeped me out. I stalked around the house dressed as Batman all goddamn night to this record. I just kept starting it over. People came over and were like...Dr. John? Really? Pop was just like, well, the kid likes it so I'm cool with that. The dude meant a lot to my growing up and I'll miss him. F*cking sucks I never made it to see him live. Damn shame.

RIP Doc.

Cool story, bro. No, like really. Cool story.

Wang Wen - Invisible City

I listened to this because pg.lost and Wang Wen did a collab and I hadn't gotten into their own stuff and man it's some great post rock. Definitely recommend.

Here's some fantastic anarchist/anti-fascist black metal I've been listening to lately

Gospel
The Moon is a Dead World

I never realized how much of a brilliant record this was when I was in the post hardcore scene in high school. So many opportunities to seem them lost to the wind. F*ck.

Luis Gasca
For Those Who Chant

I implore anybody who likes jazz to check out this and any other Luis Gasca. He perfectly blends latin soul, fusion, and soul jazz into a wonderful soup.

Aren’t you a big Van Morrison fan?

He plays on this:

I LOVE Astral Weeks but the rest of his stuff is meh. I saw that he plays with a bunch of people. His solo stuff though...so good omg.

Word up on that, son

He’s only got one on Spotify but I got it cued up. It’s a different one.

"The Little Giant"

Yeah, I'd say that is my least favorite of his but it's still a fantastic record. It's a shame he never got bigger than he did.

B.J. Cole
The New Hovering Dog

Progressive folk that reminds me of Robert Wyatt and various other Canterbury scene bands/artists. That first track is fantastic. Gets jazzy too.

Sex Beater 07-13-2019 01:23 AM

I've been listening to Repulsion - Horrified most days at the gym this week. The production is perfect - chainsaw bass and really hard guitar tone. The version on Spotify has a bunch of their demos and live performances, including those from when they were called Genocide. The 1984 stuff really underscores how aggressive they were for their time.

miRthKon
Vehicle

I've brought this album to attention a few times before but it's been forever and I recently just unearthed this CD and popped it into the car. Holy f*ck did I forget how good this was. Frank Zappa and John Zorn fans would slob all over this so if you're a fan of any of those...get on this right now.

Frownland 07-25-2019 07:49 PM

Hells yes brother, they're fun as hell. Snacks unfortunately just sounds like a retread. Do you like Panzerballet?

Dude, Snacks opens with a f*cking FIRE first thirty seconds and then just kind of plateaus. It's weird but I've just NEVER been able to get into that album like I did with Vehicle. As for Panzerballet, I think they're talented as f*ck but they never quite grabbed my attention like Mirthkon did.

Tipographica - God Says I Can't Dance (1996)

I've always appreciated how Tipographica blend some of the catchiest modal and spiritual jazz influences with free jazz chaos, but this one is especially sublime.

Stephen Bishop - Red Cab To Manhattan (1980)

Fantastic. It's not only a yacht rock masterpiece, but an occasionally punchy experimental pop outing that recalls some of the Beach Boys's best work too. Throw in some Zappa and a touch of Billy Joel and you've got a real zinger.

Charlie Haden—Liberation Music Orchestra (1969)
I picked this up from the library on a whim, knowing nothing about the album or Charlie Haden. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it's really, really good. It's a fairly large jazz band playing definitely late-60s sounding jazz inspired by the Spanish civil war. Great stuff.

Listening to this for the god only knowsth time. This has been one of all time favorite records for many years.

Key 08-10-2019 12:04 PM

Gotta say. not bad. been a long time since I've listened to Slipknot and this album is actually pretty good.

That stellar album cover makes me want to actually listen to the thing.

Anteater 09-19-2019 07:32 PM

Been digging it a lot. Covers a lot of ground, including some Sun Ra and Miles Davis-esque territory along with some R&B stuff along the lines of Earth, Wind & Fire and their ilk.
