Classic albums wise, I'd say UK, but the modern crown probably goes to the US.

In the past, NZ has had some great indie (Flying Nun Records) and of course, bands like Split Enz, Crowded House, the Herbs etc. Nowadays there's a great dub/reggae scene with bands like Fat Freddy's Drop, Salmonella Dub and Katchafire, as well as some less definable bands like Jakob, Mamaku Project, Flight of the Conchords and Birchville Cat Motel.

This is a pointless thread. No country does one genre of music better than the other, same goes on a broader scale. Good bands are everywhere, you just have to look harder in some places.

In terms of laying the foundations for so many new genres and styles of music to the world and in terms of the amount of bands being produced (both good and band), the US is at the top. Other countries as well as the US have done so much to push these genres to new heights however. Even if you don't really like some of the big genres that came from America (Blues and Jazz for example), its still a fact that many of your bands wouldn't be here if it weren't for those genres. I agree with Loose Lips that no specific country really does a specific genre better then another though, although there may be more bands in America for a specific genre then in another country, that doesn't mean that country is better at it.

What I've seen so far is so many post based soley on preference instead of fact. Theres nothing wrong with saying "I like more bands from *insert country here*." But when it starts coming to something like "I like more bands from *insert country here* which means they produce the best music," thats when the whole arguement goes to ****.

In terms of personal taste, most of my favorite bands tend to be American, but I also love bands from other countries. Mr. Bungle (and the various solo projects produced by its members), John Zorn, The Locust, Lightning Bolt, captain Beefheart, Sleepytime Gorilla Musuem, Hella and many others are from America. The bands I listen to from other countries is much more limited, but is expanding.

Seltzer speaks the truth. There is a wonderful musical subculture that gets not much recognition outside of NZ. They are not too beholden to musical fashion so therefore, at the more underground level, tend to be quirky and interesting. I have been giving a few artistes a push on this Journal if you wish to have a trawl through. There will be more to add at a later date.

Well, the U.S. does most of the genres I like better than anyone else but i I had to make a list;

Nirvana
Alice In Chains
Soundgarden
Mudhoney
Circle Jerks
Operation Ivy
Sublime
Minor Thrat and Fugazi
Leftover Crack
Choking Victim
Flipper
Cro-Mags
Black Flag
Assorted Jelly Beans
Pretty much all rap

But yeah know I still have respect from bands from other countries of course.
This is somewhat of a useless topic because It's just gonna be whatever country your favorite bands mostly come from.
