No way Canadas probably one of the best countries in the world and beside you put Alaska in that. Canada also has some pretty good music there

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-02-2008 03:24 PM

I found myself aged 15/16 listening to a lot of bad metal albums. And yet despite that even at that age , with no taste whatsoever , listening to bad metal albums on a daily basis even I could see just how cheesy this genre was and made sure I kept my distance from it.

What made it even funnier for me was the dourness behind it. These bands took themselves so seriously. I love it how virtually every band has to have a metallic logo , the album covers are just as bad , they have to be metallic also , if not then some fantasy cover and if not that just put loads of fire on it.

I love it how on every power metal album every band photo no matter which band you choose all look identical. All in black jeans , all with long hair , plenty of facial hair , one band member will always be a bit chunkier than the others and because it's a photoshoot they go to a real effort and wear a black sweatshirt with a band logo on it rather than the sweaty black band t shirts they normally wear. And there's no make up or tattoos or weird peircings or pulling silly faces with this lot like you would normally get with your average black metal band, that would be too much like fun. Instead they just sort of stand around looking bored , because they're serious musicians playing serious music. Smiling for the camera is a total no-no , that would compromise your masculinity. I mean , how can you sing about hell , the gods , wars , death , famine & pestilence if your smiling and wearing a purple & green tracksuit.

As for the music , well that's pretty much self explanatory. Lots of dull speedy riffs , long guitar solos , a bass player that's forbidden to do anything remotely interesting and is just back up to the layers and layers of guitar wankery. And the vocals can be pretty much summed up as a Bruce Dickinson wannabe on steroids.

And if your still listening to this stuff after the age of 20 unless it's in an ironic 'Oh my god did I really listen to this , although I still quite like this song' kind of way.....

Get help.

jackhammer 09-02-2008 03:27 PM

OOOHHH wait until lespaul sees the Canadian one :D. Judging a country alone by Bryan Adams and Celine Dion is a little harsh considering we have given the world Miss Dynamite and America has given us a plethora of generic gangsta Rap.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-02-2008 03:31 PM

I defy anyone to come up with a list of 10 Canadian bands I like NOT including any indie bands from the past 5 - 10 years.

I'll even start you off

Voivod
Neil Young (And even then I don't like THAT much)

I'm sorry but the song El Condor Pasa by Simon & Garfunkel has Pan Pipes. One of the best songs out there.

The problem with this, is that we can put Maiden, Priest and Saxon into this genre (in varying degress) and that wipes out my musical upbringing. You needed a pic of Manowar there and to implicitally exclude the aforementioned bands.

However I agree 100% with the ridiculous paraphenalia, imagery, album covers and dodgy lyrics in the early 80's that reduced metal to an absolute laughing stock and power metal was the biggest sinner.

I see where you're going now. First put in some legitimate ones, then a few controversial ones, now the ridiculous ones...what next...the Beatles.

jackhammer 09-02-2008 03:38 PM

Omitting the past 5-10 years is just cheating really, we could very well apply that to the UK over the past 5 years.

I was going to say that power metal reminds me of NWOBHM with all the fun & the energy taken out but I seem to have forgotten that bit.

Piss Me Off 09-02-2008 03:38 PM

I'm liking this now, getting controversial!

My thinking behind that is a few bands that are about today don't make up for 45 years of rubbish just yet :D

I already mentioned Rush on my list. I know he hasn't even heard of at least 75% of the artists I posted but it's easier to criticize anything you haven't heard.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-02-2008 04:04 PM

I can't stand Rush.

I think people need to put this in perspective a little. I'm not saying all Canadian music is bad , what i'm saying is very little of it appeals to me and I feel I hear every bad band to come out of that country.

As far as personal taste goes I like more German bands than Canadian ones. And i'd hardly call myself someone who goes out and listens to foreign speaking music on a regular basis.

What does that matter? I'm judging it on the ones i've heard.

I don't like Rush. And not because they're a bunch of pretentious, bigheaded, small-phallied ass-holes. Geddy Lee's vocals make me want to punch babies. And Geddy Lee.

I think Rush has a pretty bifurcated fanbase: there are people who absolutely love Rush and there are people who absolutely hate them. I am, obviously, a proponent of the latter. I am honestly surprised Neil Peart can drum at all, given how swollen his head is.

I'm neither, really. I think they're okay. Listenable, but not what I choose to listen to since I like many other bands more.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-02-2008 04:10 PM

If Canadians hate me this much for saying 13% of the worlds worst music comes from there I hope there's no Patagonians lurking on the forum

jackhammer 09-02-2008 04:12 PM

I swear Urban is really a cantankerous father who has had 5 kids, 3 divorces and is really 62. ;) Seriously this thread is the dog's. I only wish I thought of this before.

I can't stand Geddy's voice either but a lot of people swell over the Cure and his voice has got to be the worst in Rock history. Even Tiny Tim sounds better.

Rush starting really sucking in the mid 80's to present.

In your mind your playing in Funkadelic

In reality you look like your playing in Level 42.

Les Claypool is the exception. :)

I used to think that.

But then I realised that artists like Nickelback and Bryan Adams becoming as successful outside of Canada as they have really says more about the rest of the world than it does Canada.

lucifer_sam 09-02-2008 07:56 PM

I have a 6'7" friend that plays a mad slap bass and he is hilarious onstage. It's like his movement never really reaches his feet so he stands in own spot waving his torso and head like a mother****er. And he is hilarious in person too.

Here's just a taste of how crazy this guy is. I swear, it's not porn *coughLesPaul&JJcough*.

Yes! Thank Canada for RUSH! :drummer:

Anyway, the thing about music that pisses me off is when new artists cover and ruin a perfectly good song. i.e. 'Working Class Hero', 'Another Brick in the Wall', etc.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-03-2008 05:04 PM

I knew this thread would get bombarded with Rush fans

I'd like to put Rush in this list but I fear sadly I find them so dull that I would fall asleep while I was writing it , much in the same way as I would if I was listening to one of their albums.

lucifer_sam 09-03-2008 05:10 PM

I understand they've sold something around 25 million albums, but I have a sneaking suspicion it's the same people buying them over and over again.

Moving Pictures and 2112 are the only ones worth listening to anyways.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-03-2008 05:11 PM

2112

Ahhh now there's an idea :D

AnyColourYouLike 09-03-2008 05:18 PM

Okay, point proven, you don't like Rush.

I'd just like to point out that they have more talent and money than you will ever have.

lucifer_sam 09-03-2008 05:23 PM

They have more talent but they don't know how to use it. Their music is something that pretentious prog fans get a hard on for.
