Myspace is an example of everyone jumping on the bandwagon. They had to slacken the rules and only stop the more 'major' of the spam.

My CD collection looked very similar to that when I was 15, in other words boring. I remember hearing Bjork's Post for the first time, in that moment the floodgates opened and haven't shut since. Just keep your ears and mind open. You'll find that one artist that leads you down the rabbit hole. Checkout Massive Attack's Mezzanine. That is a great gateway album.
