Who in their right minds goes to pitchfork to read about Pink Floyd.

Whatever next?
Kerrang extolling the virtues of Fairport Convention?

Yeah people like it when they have an album they enjoy but a lot of people don't know about it or it isn't appreciated. It makes them feel special and superior in their own little world.

And then thanks to a review, or something similar, suddenly everyone is aware of it, or are rating it highly. They no longer feel special and even begin to be afraid of being lumped in with the 'moronic masses'.

I would only put it on here to point out how much I hate people that champion it.

But I don't want to give Jeff Mangum that much credit.

I feel like way more people listen to music to not fit in, than to fit in, which is what lots of pitchfork haters seem to suggest. I mean, christ, if you wanted to fit in why the hell would you listen to Neutral Milk Hotel? Death Cab seems much easier to find. And now, with Aeroplane its like 7th grade with the poser police out in full force again, since the major criticizers seem to be ex-fans. Even Urban, who put ITAOS in his list of things that annoy him about music lists some obscure NMH demos like "Beauty" as part of his music collection. Note Lucifer's correct spelling of Mangum, rather than 'Magnum' which would most likely be the common misspelling for a casual fan who hasnt found the need to google him before

Just speculation here.

Having it in your collection doesnt make you a fan of it. Me and Urban seem to have a similar sized collection and I know I have some stuff i don't like.

Plus, the correct spelling of Mangum is purely having knowledge about music. Again, doesn't mean you actually like the guy.

Yeah, just nitpicking. In any case, I seem to have been sidetracked, my main point was that I feel alot of people resent seeing a band/album they enjoy get "popular" (of course, it's reletive), which often leads to anger, depression, and bashing pitchfork.

Very True

If you read what I wrote about In the Aeroplane Over the Sea I never actually said anywhere I dislike it I just think it's a decent album for what it is in the time it was released rather than the 90s classic it seems to have become. As for the more obscure stuff , I thought they were an OK band , someone offered them to me so I took them out of curiosity , thats all.

In all honesty I don't think i've listened to the album for about 4 or 5 years, my lo-fi indiepop kick ended a few years ago.

My brother gave me a copy of it around '03 or '04 and I might have listened to it once or twice. I was ambivalent towards it until about, oh, eight weeks ago. I've heard it playing so often in my room I swear I remember all the goddamn lyrics. Now it just feels like Mangum's vocals grate against the back of my skull every time I hear it.

And for the record, I learned about the lead singer's name because my bandmate (and roommate) is obsessed with Elephant Six.

Don't forget Broken Social Scene and Apples in Stereo.

No. I don't "hate" NMH either. I just get anesthetized to all the fucking people who compare ITAOTS to Dark Side of the Moon. Give it a rest already. I'm not even putting Aeroplane on the list. And just to prove a point, originally Pitchfork gave the album a 8.7/10. Seven years later, they "re-reviewed" it and churned out this fellatio: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea | Pitchfork. Sounds like they finally cottoned onto its "significance."

Yeah, right.
