i consider music to be an immediate expression of the self through sound as controlled by the individual.

anything else is a song (or some other similar term)

it's like the difference between making love and ****ing.

^But then a robot couldn't play music (unless you consider it an individual) .. it could only mimic it. :D

Take for example a program that generates melodies. That could not be music?

Good point. Also, foley work on a film's audio track could also be described as "an immediate expression of the self through sound as controlled by the individual" but I don't think anyone would call it music.

robots and computer generated melodies left on their own are mimics to me. since they're originally programmed by individuals. :p:

as for the foley action. if amon tobin's latest was an example of what that would sound like i'm totally cool with it

Ha-ha. Great album, but you know what I'm talking about. The sound effects of footsteps and doors closing in the average movie are hardly something that would be considered music.

^Aussie, those spam posts will get deleted and you will get banned for posting them. If anything, they will make less people go to your website because everyone here hates that kind of advertisement. So for our sake and your own, just don't.

yeah true, but i thought this was about personal definitions of music hehe i'm still sticking with mine. when i play 'music' it's what i'm doing hehe.

music is very much a live / living thing for me, it only really exists in its moment. otherwise all you've got are memories or mimicries. not necessarily bad but not necessarily the same.

or at least that's how the dots connect in my head (or how the stars line up in my sky hahaha)
