Definition of Music?

What do you define as music?

For me, music really is impossible to make a concrete definition or rule of what makes things music. To me, its all up to the individual. If you think its music, then its music.

Scientific:

sounds that are deliberately used in a regular pattern.

Sounds arranged in a time scale

I learned in music theory that music is by definition, sound and silence.

Sneer 02-16-2009 09:58 PM

Elaborate upon that...

gunnels 02-16-2009 10:12 PM

Thats it.
Those were my words too.

Sneer 02-16-2009 10:24 PM

Ok... i dont follow that if i'm honest

So is stand up comedy but I don't think that makes George Carlin a musician.

self-expression by tone... i think that covers everything :p: *waits to be told he's wrong*

are 'music' and 'art' interchangeable though? You've got say 10 minutes of 'performed' silence by John Cage, you couldn't call that music but it's definitely an art exhibition

^Wikipedia says that music is an art form whose medium is sound organized in time.

Makes more sense to me than sound and silence .. By the sound and silence definition, it sounds to me that music would be something that follows you every day that you can't escape, even if you lock yourself in a tomb or live a secluded life on the highest mountain top. Sounds nice and deep, but I don't get it.
