Mostly old

Not that it's a preference , Modern music has been around for about 60 years. It makes sense that you'll find more good albums over the first 50 years of that than you would find in the last 10 simply because of the timespan.
I'm not the sort of person who can listen to something like 200 new releases a year. I'd much rather cherry pick 200 of the best albums from all eras & genres instead , new and old.

As for what I consider old & new. I started buying music properly around 1989/90 so for me 90s & 00s is new and anything before that is old.

There will always be a spot in my heart for Iron Maiden, Metallica, Floyd, Tull, ac/dc, Zepp, Janice, Jimi, John Denver, Abba and many many more, I just don't want to spend what left of my life sitting and listening to old songs I already know the words to.
I would just like to point out that this might be your first post without any smilies...I'm impressed.

I probably listen to about 70/30 when it comes to old vs. new. Certain genres (like soul for example) are almost exclusively old, while others (such as rap and hip-hop) are more on the new side. Rock and metal is a wash.

I've always stuck more to the 60s and the 70s than to the later decades, but I'm working on expanding my horizon to newer bands as well.

Personally, I'm also somewhere in the middle. I keep an eye what comes out regularly, but I don't make-believe that there isn't forty to fifty years of great music behind this generation either.
the thing about music is that it is like movies today. movies come out all the time and as a person your really not afforded the opportunity to see everything just the mainstream stuff. music is the same way no matter what decade you talk about because there are so many artists that might grind it out and give it all the have to make music but will never get heard. Right now I'm listening to a lot of classical, 50's-70's jazz, and tango which is all pretty old compared to the median era of music the majority of members are into. Admittedly I go through phases where only one or two particular musical styles are appealing to me. I'm not fickle I just know myself and I let my preferences change when they want to.
My staples seem to be hip-hop, jazz, dub reggae, rock steady, and Memphis soul which are all relatively contemporary compared to what I'm listening to now, though I havent had much interest in listening to any of them lately, with the exception of jazz.

I listen to mostly old music. It wasn't always like that, but I guess I started my downward spiral at the start of the century

Basically, I got more and more into rock music in various shapes, especially hard rock and also metal. I started out with more recent stuff and then I worked my way back to it's origins. I loved it when I found that sound you've heard replicated so many times, but there it was at the "source". Of course, if you're looking for origins, whatever you find also come from somewhere so you're gonna have to delve deeper.

Nowadays, I listen to a lot of prog. Prog quickly became out of fashion in the later 70s (died) and compared to what I listened to before, it doesn't have a great impact on later popular music. That makes it a kind of musical world of it's own and I'm not done exploring it just yet. Also, as a genre, it comprises so much musical brilliance and so many talented musicians .. I'm thrilled.

I hope no one gets mad at me for replying to this thread.... I DO HAVE SOMETHING TO ADD,im not just saying "I agree"

Anyway: I like OLDER RECORDS from the 70s and older mainly because I want the warm/beautiful analogue sound which started to be ruined in the 80s.... (Late 70s on some bands)

Journeys last good analog album for example is thier 1978 record "Infinity" .. The next one in 1979 sounds thinner and to me gross (As if it was digitally mixed) ..... Its all very sad alot of them started using this......... Nothing good about it!!!

^ Yeah, eight and a half years down the line sounds like something of a record.

Poll: Old or New? What threads do you post in more, and why?

To no-one's surprise, I listen almost exclusively to old stuff, partly because percentage-wise there's just so much more of it. Unlike many careful listeners, I barely notice distinctions between analogue and digital, etc, and in some genres the release date isn't particularly significant. Listen to a traditional song, for example, and it may not be clear when it was actually recorded.

As for current releases, I'm kind of out of the loop as I don't pay much attention to what's appearing on a month-by-month basis. In general I have a more long-term policy: wait a decade and see if there's anything good left standing.

Bottom line: the date of release is usually one of the last things I notice about a piece of music.
