Yeah, none of their albums are bad. But Ten and Vs were really their high points and everything else really pales in comparison IMO.

Ten is great and I think if you combined the good songs from Vs with the good songs from Vitology you'd have another really solid album. I kind lost interest after that and have to admit I haven't heard their last three albums at all.

I wanted to like Velvet Revolver. I tried. Then I saw them live. They are now #2 on my worst concert performance list. Maybe they were having a bad day, but I felt like I was in the gym, watching a high school band play a dance.

holynapkin 04-20-2009 05:53 PM

I'm indifferent towards this poll. While I like each band I feel that they cannot really be compared. While they are both classified as "grunge" I feel that STP deviates way too much from said title. Also, Scotty's voice is far too diverse from song to song. Actually, the whole band shifts genres from song to song. You could put Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper heart on a Pop station while their most grungiest song, Plush, barely matches categories with the previously mentioned song. Pearl Jam is incredibly consistent in what they produce making both bands incomparable in my opinion.

Definitely Pearl Jam. STP were alright in their time, and I think Weiland may even be a better vocalist than Eddie, but anyone who's seen PJ live knows the answer to this one.

I saw STP live. They played very well at that show but then again they DO have a certain reputation for being shaky for their shows. I guess I just got lucky :thumb:

The hate for Pearl Jam is amazing when it's one of the best american bands to come out of the 90's.

Mirrorball95 04-21-2009 07:02 PM

IMO, Pearl Jam are an excellent band and cant compare then to Stone Temple Pilots (who I personally think are a bit crap). Also the comment say Scott Heron is a 'heroin idiot' or whatever is irrelevant, it shouldnt matter what the artists personal life is like if you like the music and its good then its good man y'know?, look at Layne Staley he was hooked on heroin but wrote some of the most beautiful songs Ive ever heard in my life (check out Jar Of Flies).
Finally I have all Pearl Jam albums and I havent ever really heard a bad album from them at all. Obviously there are the weaker ones but they are all good albums. I also respect Eddie Vedder & Co for not selling out and deliberately destroying their rise to fame as I would have probably loathed them had they become one of these overblown bands like U2 Coldplay Guns N Roses AC/DC etc etc.

The people who hate Pearl Jam are the people who buy Lilly Allen's records.
Also it just makes you appreciate them even more and despise all the (obvious ****e)

Who? The people who hate Pearl Jam aren't moved in the least by their hardly dynamic music and excruciating vocals, not because we're too "soft" to appreciate them, as it seems you were stating. But I've seriously never heard of that lady.

People who dont like Pearl Jam confuse me. Therefore I must disallusion myself from them by using pawns like Lilly Allen & co.
As for the vocals I think Eddie Vedder has an excellent voice. i have never heard a bad album from Pearl Jam (I have them all).

Why not theyre a good band, also Ive come to appreciate Alice In Chains alot more since hearing the MTV Unplugged & Jar Of Flies albums.

Keigh 04-22-2009 07:13 AM

Both bands are great but Pearl Jam is the band. I was hooked from the first song on the first album. "Once" is so powerful it feels like someone crushing mountains. Plus I'm biased because I drove Eddie in my limo to one of his shows. He was totally down to earth and I got an all-access pass, all the backstage catered food I could eat and carry home and got to see the show for free as well as getting paid to do it. Still have the pass laying around somewhere.

STP rocks too though. Great hooks. Many songs as good as PJs just different. Too bad Weiland is such a ****headjunkiescumbag. If he could stay straight, they could have been bigger than PJ and the whole Seattle scene.

coryallen2 04-22-2009 07:14 AM

That's your opinion. And i happen to think that Pearl Jam is better.

Anteater 04-22-2009 07:39 AM

Its really funny how anyone can think a grunge-turned-alternative group like Pearl Jam is actually superior to...well, anyone, because they really aren't. Assertions like that merely reinforce the notion that you people don't listen to enough different things to know what the hell you're talking about anyway.

Who are you talking to cory? It doesn't really matter anyway because the point of this place is to GIVE your opinions :p: And just because someone voices a different one, you should take it as a personal offence (As your defensive stance seems to suggest you have)

Why is it confusing that people just have a different opinion from you?

TumorAttitude 04-22-2009 03:10 PM

Okay, after I saw how much traffic this was getting, I listened to a pirated Pearl Jam album and....my opinion of them didn't change. Then I went and read the lyrics to all the songs they have that make people cry and I still like Stone Temple Pilots better, even though the subject matter is much more serious.
I see the similarities and I know Pearl Jam was around first, but Pearl Jam is mediocre. It feels like they are the heroin to the Stone Temple Pilot's acid. The lyrics are simple, but not mindblowingly profound. The tunes are fairly catchy, but they seem to go on too long. And I would not pay money for a Pearl Jam album. Sorry, I've stated my case. Bite each other's heads off.

Because I have heard every album and never been disappointed. I can obviously accept people dont like them just due to taste or whatever but I do become baffled when people tell me there ****. You would feel the same if I told you one of your favourite bands were ****.

Firstly, I dont think Pearl Jam are superior to everyone, however I do think they are 10 times better than Lilly Allen and if you dont at least agree with this then you must be mad. To say that just because I like Pearl Jam alot that i dont listen to enough different things is foolish. I listen to several different genres & have a very open mind when it comes to music. Apart from grunge i like most other subgenres of rock (apart from Nickelback and co), Metal (most subgenres), Blues,Electronic,Jazz,Avant Garde... Just anything that floats my boat. I tend to steer away from the mainstream crap although there are some alright bands in the limelight.
So dont think your a smart arse just because you dont like one band.
I understand how when you hate a band you need a bit of release when you see posts that praise them (:banghead:).

I saw STP when I was in seventh grade, and Scott W took off all of his clothes except his undies and was asking who wanted to come on stage and blow him, then he pulled a dude up on stage and I proceeded to leave.

With the risk of sounding like a lil' retard, how can you taste coke if you sniff it up your nose?

Is it a ritual to taste your boogers after engaging in most excellent blow?

Gee, that sounds like a party.....

Mate you keep banging on about Lilly Allen. What for? They are from different areas of the music world. You may as well complain that Bach or Louis Armstrong lovers don't like Pearl Jam.

You do not have to justify your love of Pearl Jam. I am happy for you but you are justifying it with the fact that you don't like Lilly Allen?

Am I missing something? Take your time on this because I am now really interested why you would think that I may be mad if I preferred her to them.

Sorry have I hit out at a closet Lilly Allen fan?, its not just Lilly Allen I could name them all but there all equally as **** and not worth typing as each other.
Your right I shouldnt have to justify my 'love' of Pearl Jam but it appears I have come across people who need this.
Obviously I know people have differing tastes but the reasons they give are ridiculous like 'the vocals make me want to die inside'. Vedders a great vocalist and I think this is absolute nonsense. But thats just my opinion of course....
And you need therapy if you think Lilly Allen is better than Pearl Jam. ok fair enough on a preferential side but she doesnt even play a ****ing guitar for ****s sake!!, Can she even write a song? Her lyrics is nonsense one about her brother getting stoned complete and utter pish. Most people who know what real music is can tell that this is pish:
Ooooo deary me,
My little brother's in his bedroom smoking weed,
I tell him he should get up cos it's nearly half past three
He can't be bothered cos he's high on THC.
I ask him very nicely if he'd like a cup of tea,
I can't even see him cos the room is so smoky,
Don't understand how one can watch so much TV,
My baby brother Alfie how I wish that you could see.

[Chorus]
Oooooo I only say it cos I care,
So please can you stop pulling my hair.
Now, now there's no need to swear,
Please don't despair my dear Mon frere.

Ooooo Alfie get up it's a brand new day,
I just can't sit back and watch you waste your life away
You need to get a job because the bills need to get paid.
Get off your lazy arse,
Alfie please use your brain
Surely there's some walls out there that you can go and spray,
I'm feeling guilty for leading you astray,
Now how the hell do you ever expect that you'll get laid,
When all you do is stay and play on your computer games?

[Chorus]

Oh little brother please refrain from doing that,
I'm trying to help you out so can you stop being a twat.
It's time that you and I sat down and had a little chat,
And look me in the eyes take off that stupid fitted cap.

[Chorus]

Please don't despair
Please don't despair
Mon frere

Also I must apologise for ****ting on this music forum, people who know what real music is & just everything good musically in general by posting Lilly Allen's lyrics.
