Album 973

Blackfoot - Strikes
Year: 1979

Delicious southern rock album here with all the makings of a classic, had it only been released earlier it would probably now enjoy classic status. From the hard rocking start to the epic Highway Song this has everything you'd ever want in a rock album. Straight to the point with great hooks, riffs, solos and attitude. But by all means I don't feel that it sounds in anyway dated, it has a very timeless feel to it, and that's always a massive bonus. This is one to just rock out to.

3 Choice Tracks: Road Fever, Pay My Dues, Highway Song

This peaceful psychedelic folk album is the perfect example of what can be done with guitars, melody and just a lot of chilling out. The whole album plays like one giant relaxing bath, and it's just beautiful to listen to. From the soft mellow acoustic guitars to the caustic interruption of electric squeals it just feels like one epic trip that never goes out of control. The only thing to really fault the album is the short runtime of 44 minutes 53 seconds which leaves you wanting more and more until you just have to put it on again. This is one to sit back with a bit of booze or toke up and just appreciate, great for ambient background music for slow, sensual sex as well.

3 Choice Tracks: First Fantasy, A Riot of Color, Moonburn

Bought this purely on your shout Comus, its a little Bobby Dazzler

This is some great krautrock, well it's more pop than anything, but it's by far the most focused effort from Can. This is a great relaxing effort, it's lush soundscapes and sweeping motions let the album lead you through from start to finish. It's definitely a very interesting album, there's always something new to find, and it's always satisfying when you do find something new. Listen to it when you want to chill out, or just reflect.

3 Choice Tracks: Sing Swan Song, Soup, Spoon
I believe Urban called this their "funky" album, which is a great description. Though I've grown to love Tago Mago to death lately, this was the album that really got me into Can.

Album 972

Ulver - Kveldssanger
Year: 1995

Probably the best acoustic album you've never heard, at the time a rather big black metal band in the norwegian scene Garm and his bandmates showed their first glimpse of experimentation. In a scene known for it's harshness Ulver brought out this beautiful acoustic masterpiece. Garms overdubbed voice adds to the effect, almost creating a choir like experience. Even more alluring is the subtly imperfect playing of the instruments which adds more than it detracts. This was a bold statement from a band who only did one more black metal album before shifting direction (and were admittedly utter rubbish until shadows of the sun). Let this be your gateway into the wonderful world of Ulver and their four great albums. This is one, as suggested by the title, to listen to at night, while you get ready to sleep, that's what I'm doing!

3 Choice Tracks: Østenfor Sol og Vestenfor Maane, A Capella (Sielens Sang), Ulvsblakk

Compilation will come after my exam tomorrow, unless I can't sleep.

Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Year: 1972

The definition of prog rock epic. Jethro Tull's tongue in cheek effort manages to actually be a brilliant piece of prog while satirising the entire genre at the same time. The great backstory of the album helps as well, but since it's all about stuff you should "listen to" the music is far more important. Featuring catchy acoustic and electric riffs and lyrics that will stick in your head until the day you die it manages to have enough pop sensibility to be accessible to nearly everyone. Despite the lenghty song (there is only one) it never gets boring, all the various movements and melodies all incoporated into the same theme work brilliantly to deliver the desired effect. To appreciate this album get familiar with it, and then put it on instead of the music of whatever game you're playing, it's brilliant.

3 Choice Tracks: There's one, listen to that one.
I can honestly say this is one of the best albums/songs i've ever heard, thanks for reviewing it

Album 971

Budgie - Never Turn Your Back On A Friend
Year: 1973

Sometimes fast, sometimes heavy, always brilliant in the guitar and vocals department this power trio pulls of something quite spectacular here. It rocks hard straight from the get-go and Breadfan is an absolutely brilliant album opener. The softer songs may contain a bit of cheese but for the time that was to be expected. This sounds so amazingly ahead of it's time, and no wonder considering the speed of the guitars. The album end with the ten minute epic Parents which seems to last for about 1 minute, you just want to to keep playing forever, but that's what the repeat button is for. This is one to just rock out to, turn up to 11 and enjoy.

3 Choice Tracks: Breadfan, In The Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand, Parents

Right on...Right on...I picked up the German import a couple of years ago and they totally f__cked up the mix of "Baby Please Don't Go', but the rest is fantastic.

i've got Tomcattin' and it's solid all the way through. along with Black Oak Arkansas they're one of the few Southern rock bands that i can withstand.
