Default Selling Out Is SOO Underated

I don't see why everyone has such huge beef with bands "selling out", even if it was a band that had a small dedicated fan base and decided that eating out of trash cans to pursue artistic endeavors was an enjoyable life style, isn't it not the audiences place to decide what music they create? Besides I think it would be a blast to see what kind of horrible **** you could get mass amounts of people to listen to, hell I bet that in itself could be an art and if you did make **** music but had great potential for interesting music what is stopping you from making it on the side, it is not like you have to release everything you make. Hmm after reading this I realized I didn't really keep the theme of "Selling out" instead I was really talking about pop (not that all pop music is awful), anyways if i were a musical genius I would not feel guilty in any way about making crap music (as long as I could get enough money to afford plastic surgery to ensure that I don't get stoned to death by Anti-Pop indie kids and fake some kind of death involving toilets and hopefully I would be forgotten within 15 minutes). I think my gimmick would be to add reggae to remixs of remixs and the debut would have some kind of non clever reference to pop culture album title like bringing funky town back or something stupid.

Yeah, this is the most overrated topic ever. No one really cares on this forum anymore about this.

Seen, Odyshape (I hope). 'Bringing Funky Town Back', I'd lap that up but only if it was being made by Level 42.
I know you're being ironic but you haven't defined 'selling out' either, all the bands you've heard of and read about 'sold out', it's part of the industry, except most of them aren't honest about it. Their labels knocked up the bullsh*t 'overnight myspace sensation' press packets and got the key journalists to hear them

I saw this typically incoherent, mumbling interview years ago with the Mars Volta on TV, they were trying to worm their way out of an awkward question about why they signed to Universal:
'Well...uhm...we, like...uh...really we did it so we could reach as many people as possible, y'know?'

Distribution and billboard space is one thing (although this matters less and less everyday with blogs and online 'opinion leaders' like Cockfork) but it's this kind of lackadaisical, dishonest, greedy attitude that ends up lining the same pockets with cash, and it's inexcusable especially if you had already made it with your first band like ATDI. Torrent their discography as a matter of principle. If they just laughed and said 'cause the money's real f*ckin' sweet if you shift units' I'd have more respect for them

I personally don't think you can compare changing your label to changing your sound. Especially since you're going to get a pretty shitty deal from the major ones anyways.

I dunno, if its a small indie band letting their song be played in a movie so they can eat for a few weeks, thats perfectly fine. If its an artist changing up their sound a little after rehab/having a child/loved one's death/ect., that is also fine.

BUT if its an artist making an album that is so utter crap that there is no way they made it for any purpose other then money....thats bad. If its a band going on a "Farewell Tour" and charging internal ****ing organs for tickets, thats horrible.

Isn't it a little extreme to say all the bands I have heard of or read about sold out, in fact barely any of the bands I listen to haven't sold out (albeit they never really had the chance to). Any way thanks for the response didn't realize how critical the community is

If a band changes their sound because of money then they weren't worth obsessing over anyways. Bands that try to spread their own true unique sounds through the thick and thin I respect.
