Many of us are (hopefully) hearing new stuff each week so the purpose of this thread to let people know what new shit you have heard this week. A short write up and maybe a vid and this way we don't have to have lots of threads laying dormant, forgotten and unloved about our new sounds

This weeK:

Jawbox

Are a 90's Post Hardcore band with a simple but very well produced sound and the ubiqutious female bass player. They were accused of going mainstream with their major label '94 release For Your Own Special Sweetheart but their sound remained the same.

Bitch Magnet

Yup another Post Hardcore band though very short lived. Their first EP was produced by Steve Albini but they decided on a different sound with their 2 other albums.

Number Girl

Japanese noise rock outfit but who used melody a la Sonic youth, Pixies etc to get their kicks. I am sure there is one member of the mod team who will like these!

Jawbox is great, even their last album was great and not sell-out material at all. Have you heard Burning Airlines or Channels? They are Jawbox front man J. Robbins' two more recent bands...both great. They are maybe a little less hardcore than Jawbox, more like a continuation without going mainstream.

I looked up Bitch Magnet earlier in the week, probably from a post you made in the purchase/download thread. What I read sounded interesting but I haven't listened to any samples yet.

I'll watch these vids and post some stuff later on. Nice thread.

No I haven't heard any of robbins other stuff as I'm still new to Jawbox. Cheers for the heads up though. I will delve a little further!

Awesome thread idea! My week:

AKALA

A rapper from the UK, so I guess he falls under the catergory of "Grime", anyway most of his lyrics are somewhat political, but in an interesting way, also his flow is the best I've heard in a long time.

DIANOGAH

Straight from Sidewinder is an indie rock group that at times sound more like noise or post rock.

SPANK ROCK

Another hip-hop group I should've gotten into a long time ago. They have a technoey feel to them as well.

I also got my first adolescents album, but I figure everyone knows them already.

Strawfoot

Been meaning to look into these guys ages ago but I'm happy I finally did, another artist has been added to my ever expanding collection of "Gothic Country" which makes me feel very happy. The album I was able to obtain "Chasing Locusts" was brilliantly executed with a good blend of rock and country with the dark song writing that drew me into the genre.

Creech Holler

Following up Strawfoot wasn't easy, but I was recommended this band from last.fm and I didn't even bother to listen before finding the album and buying it (yes that's right I BOUGHT it). First of all, the cover for the album is an amazing drawing, so much that lucifer_sam asked me to send it to him. While a bit more rock based than Strawfoot, Creech Holler have made me a fan and I will be on the lookout for the rest of their stuff.

Aydio

London based DJ, composer, and producer, Adam Harper really wowed me with this 4 song EP. Some of the most beautifully done Trip Hop that I`ve heard in awhile, I really gotta give it up this guy, I cannot wait for his new EP to drop on June 15th, mark your calender!

Sixtoo

I got this courtesy of Sidewinder in the weekly music trade and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by it. It was more trip hop than anything else, but it managed to keep my attention, which is something trip hop doesn`t always do. For the most part instrumental, which was cool because most of the instrumental hip hop stuff I get is Japanese but this was Canadian so it had a more Western edge to it if that makes any sense at all. Enjoyed it very much and will definitely look up more stuff by this guy.

I really like this track but it's certainly not grime. Grime is much more dirty with the emphasis on big beats that regulary crossover into dubstep. Not every Rap artist from over here falls under grime!

I guess the main development for me this week was getting into The Flaming Lips, first with The Soft Bulletin and a little later with Transmissions from the Satellite Heart. Both are pretty awesome.

The arrangement that kicks in around 1:37 is orgasmic.

This was inspired by The Flaming Lips featuring on the first song of Dark Night of the Soul, by Dangermouse and Sparklehorse which is also awesome, with an insane guest list.

That is absolutely appalling quality, but it's still a brilliant song.

I haven't really had such a musically adventurous week. I've just been delving deeper into discographies I already own bits of. For example;

^ I needed a couple of his 70s albums to complete his discography; New Skin For the Old Ceremony and Recent Songs, from which this song spawns. The latter's probably my favourite of the two (with the above being one of new favourite Cohen songs), but both represent an interesting middle-ground between his earlier, acoustic folk and his more grandiose interpretations of it in his later years.

^ Head Injuries is definitely the best product of the Oils' much more punk-oriented early years, and was an album I'd been looking for for yonks.

^ Wrecking Ball is another album I'd been meaning to get for a while now, being one of her most acclaimed albums as it is. It's probably the best I've come across too - finds her moving away from her roots in traditional C & W and towards a much darker sound.

^ From kicking off the Australian punk scene to this. After guitarist Ed Kuepper left the Saints singer Chris Bailey completely made the group his own and took them down a very different musical path. As I expected, it's completely different from their early work, and not really as good either. This song (and album) are alright though.

Have had their praises sung by quite a few here and i can't resist an album name like that. Right up my alley, hardcore punk given a more heavy metal feel and the production is top too.
