Some more I just thought of.
Tom Waits - "Dead and Lovely" "Trampled Rose" "Tom Traubert's Blues" "Warm Beer and Cold Women" John Prine - "Six o'clock News" "Far From Me" "Sam Stone" Opeth - "To Rid The Disease" "Windowpane" "Hope Leaves" |
Out of the list I picked Smashing Pumpkins....
When I was teenager and my dad heard me playing smashing pumpkins he would always open the door of my bedroom and ask if i was ok.... Because "I was listening to music to blow your brains out too". I agree with ya Elephant sack on John Prine... Hes got some good depressing songs, drink alone music. |
The Cure - Disintegration
most depressing album ever. also my favorite album ever. |
Smashing Pumpkins are quite depressive I suppose, Mayonaise is a sad song althogh completely brilliant at the same time. I like how a few of their songs are about how bad things in life are.

Dave Matthews has the whiniest voice ever, imo. |
Hate him if you want but Matthew's voice never really struck me as whiny... some of his songs can be a little grating at times but whiny is probably not an adjective I'd use...

I say that and yet I don't have any of his albums.. maybe I'll get one eventually. Live at Luther College most definitely. Well back on topic "Do you still remember when we were little? When we were playing in the park and you asked me what happens when you die. I said you forget everything ... everything. 'Even you?' you asked. 'Yes, even me'. You did not want to die. Never forget. The remains of what we used to have were taken away with the softest squeeze. How did I forget? How..." EDIT: And quite a bit of other Suicidal/Depressive Black Metal. I think that should be voted as the most expository genre name ever |
Live skull.

Rivulets are pretty depressing.
|
The Johnny Cash version of Hurt always seems to bring me down.
|
I always thought that "Waiting Around To Die" by Townes Van Zandt was the most depressing song I have ever heard.
|
A depressing song I can think of right now is Creep By Radiohead.

The fact that DCFC have 11 votes is... Rather depressing, isn't it? They sort of pride themselves on tugging on your emotions with limited accuracy...
If any Radiohead song qualified for depressing, I'd say "Kid A" works best. Seems very claustrophobic and trapped in a pretty desperate manner. Lately, "Katy Song" by Red House Painters works wonders. Some of its lyrics seems pretty boiler-plate out of context ("Without you, what does my life amount to?") but it's genuinely sad, which I like. |
I really don't get the idea that music is depressing - melody is always uplifting for me, however plaintive the words.
Coldplay, Radiohead, Damien Rice - all get accused of being maudlin, but I love 'em all... |
I've always thought Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Alone Again (naturally)' was really depressing. I think it's because of the contrast of the happy tune and the lyrics that just make it so sad...

Codeine - Barely Real

That's my favourite RHP song, truly brilliant. |

I don't know if I could call Radiohead depressing, considering I've only heard OK Computer. That was depressing though. Alot of AIC and Nirvana are depressing too. This song has always sounded depressing. And so has this one. |
Swans : Nobody I Mean Nothing To Myself. I Mean Nothing To Myself. I'm Nothing, I'm Nobody. I Hate My Body, I'm Stuck In Myself. I'm Nothing, I'm Nobody. I Don't Move, I'm Stuck In Myself. I Hate My Body, I'm Stuck In Myself. I'm Nothing, I'm Nobody. I'm Nothing, I'm Nobody. Glory!glory!glory! Glory!glory!glory! |

Listening to Frankie Teardrop alone at 3 in the morning is an interesting experience, I wouldn't recommend it.
|
Revolution 9 is also creepy like "Frankie Teardrop".
|
Revolution 9 isn't anywhere near is creepy.
|
Revolution is even creepier backmasked, as 1 person put it "It feels like Satan is behind you".

It's rare music depresses me. I have enough sh*t going on, music is more of an escape (as horribly cliched as that sounds). So, that said, I'll have to go for Coldplay because I can't stand them and having to listen to them would probably put me in a pretty sh*tty mood. I agree with Jumby, stuff like Damien Rice, some of Tori Amos's and Regina Spektor's material doesn't depress me at all. |

Coldplay? There's a difference between depression and boredom. I don't mind them though. They're just a bit dull. I enjoyed one of their albums, though I'll probably never listen to it again. Damien Rice's first album moved me.. More than depressed me. No idea why, not many albums manage to do that. |
Quote:
I'll agree with you on Damien Rice. I know a lot of people that think he's incredibley boring, but I actually thought 'O' was a really good album. I generally listened to it more when things were going to sh*t, but it never depressed me any more. It was a good album for me to just sit back, listen to and not actually have to use my brain in any way other than to appreciate the music. Which is always nice! '9' didn't really grab me in the same way, unfortunately. Apart from '9 Crimes'. Not sure why (he's done better music), but I got a soft spot for that song. |
Quote:
I thought O was a masterpiece, one of the best records of the 00s. Reminiscent of Leonard Cohen, such a sombre tone to it. The string arrangements were great. 9 was incredibly average. He's had 2 records in about 8 years? He needs to pull his finger out and follow up 9 with something epic. |

Tough break, you could've sat around doing nothing for 3 hours instead. Much more productive. I'm joking, 9 isn't all bad.. O was always a hard album to follow up. I wonder when he's gonna release another one. |
I've had worse days I guess. Though I've a mind to send him a bill for my £3.70 bus fare. I think he owes me that.
I've got high hopes for his next one (providing he didn't cry over his music being compared to a Swedish chair and decided to give up). '9' kind of sounded like it was an album he had to make rather than wanted to make (if that makes any sense). '9' was released about 2006 I think, so we should be due for something pretty soon. I hope. |

A truly hard, brilliant song : Cat Power - He Turns Down
have you ever seen the face? you know the one I'm talking about have you ever been to that place? you know (the one) I'm not suppose to say holding on for something have you ever held on? holding on for someone feels like holding on too long have you ever held on? it's not me I am pretending I'm not saved, he turned me down he turns down it is so nice to meet you who's gonna look out for you it's not me I am pretending I'm not saved, he turned me down he turns down |
Coldplay are the most depressing band I can think of and in the worst way possible! I can't stand them and I have to leave the room if they are on the radio or I get really down! Some would say a certain band is depressing simply because it's music has a slow pace and honest, realist lyrics that touch on upsetting subjects! I find Coldplay so depressing simply because they sound awful and get too much airplay!!

SIGUR ROS!
god, their music is so depressing! but yet again, most post-rock is. |
