Depressing song
The most depressing song I know is "Crown of Thorns" by Rakaa.
|
I think it's rather silly to list bands in a poll. Half on the list aren't even "depressing".
|
Surprised I didn't mention him before, but most of the stuff Antony Hegarty does is depressing.
Some really interesting covers too. |

Coldplay is depressing in a lot of ways, not just the mood of their music
|
Radiohead....omg they put me in a bad mood, but a lot of people love em so their doing something right :P
|
I would have to say that the most depressing song for me is City and Colour - Comin' Home. It reminds me of many childhood memories with this girl I fell in love with. My second vote would have went to Death Cab For Cutie. I like Grapevines, Soul Meets Body, Brothers On A Hotel Bed and I Will Possess Your Heart.
|
Red House Painters have got to be up there, but that isn't a criticism, it's partly why they're so damn good.
Case in point. |
Radiohead would be my first pick. Mainly because, I personally don't like their style of depressing music.
Neil Young next, mainly because Ive heard basically everything by him, and I'm thinking of his single Old Man right at the moment. That particular song along with overplay depresses me. Tool fits on my list somewhere, I just haven't reflected on their music enough to express any kind of valid opinion yet. Alice and Chains, along with (Kurt Cobain) Nirvana as well, wrote a style of rock lyrics that had never been wrote or heard before, or mostly, never been said before in the particular way they said and related through their lyrics. I see the lyrics of Cobain etc as, a lyrical template, a file that serves as a starting point for a new document in the evolution of rock lyrics. Placebo and the Smashing Pumpkins are favorites as well. |
The Antlers have only been mentioned twice. Hospice is powerfully depressing, but also uplifting and soothing in a way.
"Bear" is about a young couple who aren't happy with each other and decide to get an abortion. Does it get much heavier than that? |
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Boatman's Call Black Heart Procession - 3 All are albums I revel in when the black dog is barking at my door. |

AIC for sure

I voted for Tool because I find the fact that so many people like them depressing, but I think my real vote might go to the band I Hate Myself. Their name is hella gloomy, and they sound like this:
|
|
Vision of Disorder - From Bliss to Devastation. My brother had this album, if you're not sick of the world and you want to be, then this is the album for you. Never did try any of their other ones, I was going to but one listen of this and I thought what's the ****ing point.
|
La Dispute. Monumentally sad post-hardcore goodness
|
I voted classical composer with Eric Satie in mind. Possibly the saddest I've ever felt
|
I listen to a lot of extremely gloomy and anguished **** that makes doom metal sound like humppa in comparison, but I still think Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" beats it all. There's obviously a lot of music about discrimination, murder and injustice, some being a lot more explicit in its descriptions or being backed by sadder sounding music, but none resonates with me as strongly.

Maybe they were mentioned before, however a quick "Thread Search" of their name yielded no result. So, one of my favourite Folk/Doom Metal bands and probably my favourite band from South America is a band called Uaral. They only released two LPs and a bit of other stuff before splitting up, but a lot of it's really good, sad melancholic stuff. The primary aspect of their music which draws the most interest from me is how well they've incorporated South American Folk music with their other Extreme/Doom Metal sound.
The only thing in their music that leaves me kinda wanting is, due to English not being their first language, some of the lyrics' grammar is somewhat poor, though it's adequate enough if the listener isn't wanting to focus on the lyrics as a primary aspect for their enjoyment of Uaral's music, because the music's otherwise quite great. However, I've also heard some complaints over the inclusion of Extreme Metal vocals in their music, it was never much of an issue for me, and probably shouldn't be for anyone else who likes, or can at least tolerate that vocal style. Their first album is probably my favourite of theirs, though their second is also worthwhile. Here's their first: The band Sigh has also done quite some doomy stuff. I think the song Seed of Eternity is particularly doomy and great, with some quite sad lyrics. Metal-Archives' display of the lyrics to the song is a bit incorrect, though it's correct for the most part if anyone's interested in looking them up while listening to the song, and anyone who can usually make out lyrics from Extreme Metal vocalists should be able to make out the rest of the lyrics pretty well as the vocalist is much more intelligible than many other Extreme Metal vocalists out there. The lyrics really do add a lot of doom/gloom to the song and they pair up quite well together, so for the sake of posting this in this thread, I really would recommend reading them while/if you listen to the song. |
Always found Morphine to be pretty depressing.
|
I never enjoyed when artists reinterpret and redo songs to make them into tearjearker songs. Yes, I do understand that you can really "listen" to the lyrics better and understand the song in a whole new way...but I prefer to listen to the original song rather than the more "depressing" interpretation...I just find it irritating and annoying and a somewhat cheapening of the original song. Just my pov.
Cases in point: Alphaville's "Big in Japan" vs Ane Brun's interpreation or Tears for Fears's "Mad World" vs. Gary Jules's version |
Nin - something I can never have

I think U2 is the most depressing band because it makes me sad that something so terrible got so popular.
