Wow that song is awesome!! :yikes: Though I don't see it as sad.. more dark.

Fix You - Coldplay
"when you feel so tired you can't sleep
stuck in reverse"

scottsy 07-17-2010 02:19 PM

Maybe I am just a strange guy, but I always found "Fix You" more of an uplifting ballad than a depressing ballad, but indeed, i have been categorized as odd before...

TheCunningStunt 07-17-2010 02:29 PM

I'm not sure of Coldplay are depressing or just plain old dull...

FashionistState 07-17-2010 02:33 PM

I voted Nine Inch Nails.
Haunted by Gary Numan's pretty depressing, but very beautiful at the same time.

scottsy 07-17-2010 02:36 PM

I don't have a problem with Coldplay... probably one of my favorite "pop" bands of our times, I guess, but their music by far is not terribly dark or depressing.... I find it seems to be my "uplifting" music, really...

TheCunningStunt 07-17-2010 02:41 PM

I don't hate them or anything and don't understand the amount of stick they do get, as they aren't completely terrible. But they're very bland and boring. Parachutes and Rush Of Blood To The Head are both alright, I don't rate any of their other albums at all though. I'm not sure how you can find it uplifting, how'd you manage that?

scottsy 07-17-2010 02:50 PM

Well, I listen to alot of depressing music... lol.... coldplay's songs are relatively more complacent sounding, and there are uplifting songs in their catalogue, perhaps more so on their most recent album, perhaps? They're a fine band IMO! I also don't understand the stick they get - I am not billing them as the second coming of the rock Jesus, but I just think they're a solid pop / rock band that I enjoy.

TheCunningStunt 07-17-2010 04:45 PM

Their own, each to. But they're so painfully middle of the road and bland it's beyond belief, I think the reason they get so much stick is because they're a big selling artist that are a bit meh. Just like U2, not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but because of how many records they sell, they get more stick than they'd get say if they sold half the amount of records.

Coldplay are either depressing or dull, I'm thinking a bit of both.

glastonelle 07-17-2010 04:52 PM

I dont think Coldplays that depressing. Its melancholic, but otherwise there are some very uplifting songs on their albums.

I voted Other though. Why wasnt Joy Division there? Closer put me in a state of depression for about a week.

TheCunningStunt 07-17-2010 04:57 PM

Most depressing band.. and the winner is:

By far the most depressing band I've ever heard, but there's a great solace in their music and a get sense of feeling, and even some hope there. I always listen to Joy Division when I'm down, Ian Curtis really did cut his veins open and bleed for us. The Smiths would be up there, but Marr's guitar playing is so damn catchy and uplifting despite Moz's dark cynical lyrics.

Samm 07-18-2010 12:41 AM

Codeine is a pretty depressing band, far more so then the majority if not all of the bands in the poll imo

Dr.Seussicide 07-18-2010 01:00 PM

^^ Codeine's a good pick. As well as Rivulets and Pedro the Lion.

When you listen to song titled "Second Best" over and over it kinda gets to you after a while.

Aerohead 07-20-2010 08:24 PM

Anyone like Shamrain? I discovered them on Last Fm.

James 07-21-2010 01:52 AM

Neil Young at his most depressing, kicks every single artist on this list in the balls. Saddest lyrics ever. I accidently voted for Coldplay though.

zakkman 09-24-2011 02:11 AM

The bands I find the most depressing are The Smashing Pumpkins, No-Ca$h, Matthew Good Band, Radiohead, City and Colour and Coldplay. Leftover Crack is pretty sad too with their song Life is Pain.

Zer0 09-24-2011 06:02 AM

Codeine are definitely one of the most depressing bands I've ever heard.

Also a lot of Red House Painters songs nearly crack me up, especially this

But as was said before, Joy Division are pretty much the winners.

Siddi 09-25-2011 05:45 AM

My Dying Bride. ^^

Sneer 09-25-2011 12:07 PM

This song is about a factory worker who commits suicide. Coupled with the stark instrumentation and lacerating vocal, it's actually quite harrowing.

Obvious pick, but this song delivers one hell of a kick to the balls with its desperate tale of loneliness.

Honestly, just read/listen to the lyrics.

AgeOfOddz 09-26-2011 04:46 AM

Joy Division is an obvious choice. Not sure why they aren't on the list. Hospice by The Antlers makes me want to stay in bed for weeks on end as well.

Howard the Duck 09-26-2011 07:30 AM

kinda weird The Smiths and Joy Division aren't in the poll

bob. 09-26-2011 08:22 AM

i honestly do not think there is a more despondent song written...."all my dreams shall be emptiness and misery".....the song is strangely comforting

Paedantic Basterd 09-26-2011 12:02 PM

I don't find the Smiths depressing, which is one of the things they're best known for being.

Zer0 09-26-2011 02:29 PM

Overall The Smiths probably aren't that depressing as such, they can even be quite funny at times, but they certainly have their depressing moments, for example.

"Oh mother I can feel the soil falling over my head" - that line gets me every time.

And also the last song on their self-titled album, especially if you know what inspired it.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 09-27-2011 10:58 PM

I know Swans has been mentioned, but this song has been pretty high for me lately, and I'd consider it quite depressing.

I love Swans, and I love that album, but honestly I find that song so over the top that it's hilarious to me.

Eh, Cynicism is always welcome to me, and the fact it's exaggerated to the point where it is makes it appealingly irreverent. Can't really write something that ridiculously seemingly narcissisticly self indulgently bitter without being legitimately pissed off.

Feel it works better than a 'sad' song that's trying to be down to Earth, and relatable.

Banana Dave 09-29-2011 04:12 PM

Joy Division

14232949 09-29-2011 04:56 PM

What do you guys think of Swan's cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart?

ripdbd6604 10-01-2011 09:13 AM

I think cold takes the cake they just have that mood about them..

bob. 10-02-2011 01:09 AM

i love swans version of love will tear us apart....both mike's and jarboe's takes.....although i have to say that jarboe's version cuts straight to the bone for me

as for failure....i always felt it was just a weird song choice in album that concentrates on such beautiful walls of sound....personally i find Love Will Save Love to be much more despondent than Failure.....

Raust 10-02-2011 03:04 PM

The guy has some pretty dark lyrics and imagery.

cheif101 10-06-2011 06:45 PM

anything funeral doom is the as depressing as it gets.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 10-06-2011 06:55 PM

Wait, how about this one:
