A Day In The Life of Lateralus:

"Hey mom and dad, you've got to check out this album I just got. It's by a band called Tool, and they're awesome!"

Dad: "Scapel?"

"No, no, Dad it's music, y'know like recorded sounds? Let me just put it on for you guys and you'll see...

My parents like exactly the same things, which is terrifying... My dad is more musical than my mom, but they listen to the same stuff, which is pretty much anything. Rolling Stones, the Beatles, classical, Zeppelin, Wilco, country rock, zydeco, African music, old soul and blues... I don't really like any of their music, but i appreciate the interest in music they gave me. I didn't like any music until i was 12 or so, and for a while my interests were very limited. The only music i was exposed to was their music. And then i found metal... sigh

I can't imagine not having an interest in music as a kid

When I bought a turntable i inadvertently inherited my parents old vinyl, a meager collection but it has some gems; a handful of albums by Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, Carly Simon, live Dylan recordings..ect (not to say they didn't buy alot of trash too - Barbara Streisand?).. but since then their tastes have severely dropped off. My mom's favorite album? NOW That's What I Call Gospel.. and I don't think my dad even listens to music anymore.

My dad is a trumpet player. So I grew up listening to the greats. Armstrong, Davis, Dizzy...

Listening to jazz and learning to appreciate its complexities allowed me to venture off to other genres of music and learn to hear it's appeal. It allowed me to be open minded about all genres.
