I liked them a lot during my early teens, but have since lost my interest. They're good to dance to when you're drunk, though.

Despite that I feel now that they're very overrated, I'm still gonna vote yes to due to the importance they've had for me over the years. They were one of the first four artists I really got into (along with The Beatles, The Stones and Bob Dylan).

I have been voting yes for pretty much every artist so they can get a fair shot to be on a ballot, because this vote right means to me: Do they have the credentials to be on the ballot? So most of the time it is yes.

I would probably vote no in the balloted vote though, don't listen to them enough and there are better 60s pop bands imo.

Robert Plant and the other members of Zeppelin were heavlily inspired by the blues, so it's only natural that they pay tribute to their favorite artists...

Without instigating an enormous flame war, I'd like to respectfully vote no on this matter. The Beach Boys (Brian Wilson especially) never cut it as songwriters in my opinion and they earn way to much respect for the few talents that they had.

I appreciate your approach and you being upfront about it.

I am still undecided, but will likely end up going yes.

Pet Sounds is a tad overrated I suppose, though it's still listenable at worst. I can understand calling it inconsistent or boring, but not bad.

Smiley Smile is also pretty good and their albums consistently contained a hit single for whatever that's worth.

Hmmmm...

If you're posting in the music forums make sure to be thoughtful and expressive, if you're posting in the lounge ask yourself "is this something that adds to the conversation?" It's important to remember that a lot of people use each thread. You're probably not as funny or clever as you think, I know I'm not.

i used to think the beach boys were so cheesey.

in university, i took at 60's music/pop culture class that consisted of three chapters - dylan, the beatles, and the beach boys.

i learned SO much about brian wilson, and mike love, and the whole dynamic of the BB's. they are fascinating.

yes, my answer is yes, put them up there. without the BB's, dylan or the beatles, where would music be today?

A definite no. I actually find the Beach Boys unlistenable, whether it's their early singles or Pet Sounds. The tunes are irritating, the lyrics would get you laughed out of third grade ("Love Me Do" has nothing on the Beach Boys for pure idiocy), and the harmonies make me sick.

This has nothing to do with the music, but I'd like to add that Brian Wilson has an ego that makes Mick Jagger or Pete Townshend seem downright humble. Remember that Rolling Stone Top 500 songs list? Wilson's top ten included five Phil Spector productions and five of his own tunes. At least Macca and Ray Manzarek had the self control to only include one song from their respective bands. Also, the liner notes to the reissue of Pet Sounds are ridiculous. Wilson basically pats himself on the back for creating a "masterpiece." Sure...

Ok, I've vented.
