I think iTunes is the worse place you can buy music from, from the terrible software you need to use, to the stupid practices that have followed it around. It's good that they finally got rid of DRM etc but they still have a bit of your info in each file you download. Try not to lose your iPod because it's easy to open a track and get your email and a few other bits of data off their.

I dont really use any online mmp3 store much, but when I have it's been Amazon. It was ok, nothing special but nothing to moan about either.
