Was this in reference to maybe I > ITTOD?

If so, here's my view...The Debut is a great album, but however, it's still the sound of getting things together, much like many debuts do in the first place - Great jamming, but only a warm-up by comparison to what came after that, and in my view II was the one that said they were going to stick around for good. ITTOD, despite having that cringe-worthy "All My Love" which can seriously mark the album down all the way to worst, and of course "Fool In the Rain" which is a little too jumpy for it's own good, had "Carouselambra" (which may be a bit of a filler, but it's a good bit of the Led Zeppelin Indulgence for one last round and a fine way to check out John Paul Jones' keyboard playing), the fine album opener "In the Evening," and "I'm Gonna Crawl" a good closer with a great vocal performance. ITTOD was a bit of a troubled album, but they pulled it off despite it all.

I don't know, maybe it's just personal memories (I was starting to get into music as a kid by the time ITTOD was released and it was filled with JPJ's playing - a good thing as someone learning the Piano), but somehow the debut still sounds like a warm-up, a great showcase, but nothing to seriously hint at the strong identity that II offered plenty of.

Except the Led Zeppelin debut was totally badass and one of their best albums.

Edit: and I really enjoy Fool In The Rain

OK, changed, for a real reason

Now edited and corrected as it stands...

One of my biggest thoughts about the Debut was that while it was a monster jam, a couple of parts were mainly refinements of Last-Year Yardbirds ideas, and I was looking more at the originality more than the full on effect (One of my admitted occasional turns in judgment). While the few Yardbirds fanatics left (after the worrying Little Games) may have noticed, millions of others who bought it in it's first few years never got a chance to hear The Yardbirds' killer "I'm Confused" as "Dazed and Confused" won 'em over. Plus, one innovative keyboard jam does not make a whole album, so the vote is switched officially.

...plus "Communication Breakdown" is among the best "Amps At 11" moments of '69.

A lot of people regard debut albums as some of the best work by a band, the band have normally been playing togeather for a few years, they`re hungry, the desire to get out an album is high, the sound they want the world to hear is what normally goes onto that debut album. Some groups evolve into better bands after their debut, whilst others just don`t really find that spark again!

A number of my all time fav albums are debut albums as well.

Well said. While I find most debut albums not as good as the later ones, I think that the debut is the most ambitious, the rawest sounding ones, and is a very good indicator of what sort of direction the band will go in.

My Led Zep one would go like:

Houses of the Holy>Physical Graffiti>IV>III>Presence>II>I>In Through the Out Door

No, no, no.

I really don't understand people that do this.
