Pale Folklore is great but I'd say it's a lot worse than the others. The other 3 are really close together in quality.

My up to date Sonic Youth scale.

EVOL > Sister > Dirty > Daydream Nation > Washing Machine > Goo > Confusion Is Sex > Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star > Bad Moon Rising > A Thousand Leaves > Sonic Youth > Rather Ripped > The Eternal > NYC Ghosts & Flowers > Sonic Nurse

I've left Murray Street out, purely because I've not listened to it enough to place it.

The Captain Beefheart albums that I know well enough to categorize:

Safe as Milk > Trout Mask Replica > Doc at the Radar Station > Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) > Lick My Decals Off, Baby > Clear Spot

Captain Beefheart:

Doc At The Radar Station > Trout Mask Replica > Lick My Decals Off, Baby > Ice Cream For Crow > Safe As Milk > Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) > Strictly Personal > Spotlight Kid > Clear Spot > Bluejeans & Moonbeams > Mirror Man > Unconditionally Guaranteed

Up to Spotlight Kid, I think they're all f'ucking brilliant. Doc is my favourite, just over Trout Mask and Decals... the order of favourites has changed a bit recently, as I've been re-listening to them all after his death. One of ma fav artists for sure.

I think we're both in the minority for thinking that Velvet Revolver has released anything of worth... I thought Contraband was a solid album.

I'd say Closing Time is his best album ;D.
Raindogs Second, Mule Variations Third, Alice Fourth.
Tastes differ

Closing Time is good, but it's just a bit to close to James Taylor for me.
