Do we honestly need to classify though? Many artists overlap a bajillion different genres, if they stuck to one genre only, their music would be awfully boring.

That is what the slash is for,
Example: Children Of Bodom is Power/Death Metal.

Agreed. Just post in the artist's official thread if you feel like you need to classify them. Or better yet, read the artist's thread first for clues.

No it isn't. Maybe bits of information might be incorrect, but if you're looking for something as simple as genres Wiki is sufficient.

Exactly. I wouldn't get something like statistics from Wikipedia unless they were well-annotated, but something like a description of a musical genre is exactly what the site is great for.
