Heh, I don't hate him. I think he's good, but overrated by a sh*tload without a doubt.

Definitely don't give a f*ck about those ranked below him though.

Dude I'm not trolling. I seriously think Phil is a good singer and that Cave is bad.

Not a baritone fan I guess.

I get where you're coming from but Dylan told stories. Cobain said himself that he didn't feel like his songs ment anything. Dylan DID take ordinary words and make them interesting, because he told stories and shared ideas.. Cobain usually did not use ordinary words. His lyrics are interesting and backed by good music but when they stand alone, they don't evoke the same emotions as Dylan's. I feel like you don't understand what the song is really about until you hear it and you get most of the emotional impact from the way Cobain sings it.
That being said, I'd rather listen to Nirvana then Dylan but I'd rather listen to a better grunge band like KARP or Mudhoney then Nirvana. Dylan and Kurt are both good mucisians but they arn't my favorites and they're both overrated.

Cohen is my favourite lyricist. His lyrics are beautiful.

Well I disagree, but aside from that this thread is about overrated songwriters not overrated singers and Cave is a way better songwriter than Collins.

As someone who has a Morrissey lyric permanently on her skin, I can testify that this is indeed false, probably the only tattoo I won't regret. How is he overrated? especially with Smiths era? **** that, even now, Years of Refusal has some absolute lyrical gems IMO

If anything Lynne is UNDERRATED.

Peart isn't really a songwriter, just a lyricist. It's Lee and Lifeson who write the actual music most of the time.

Barrett is great but he is indeed overrated, I'm so f*cking sick of everyone bitching about how Floyd were only good with Barrett, suck my d*ck you hipster c*nts. Waters and Gilmour pwn Barrett so much as songwriters it's ridiculous that people even bother comparing.

Actually I should have just said Morrissey. The Smiths are excellent (but still overrated IMO) but what solo Morrissey I've heard was pretty terribad. So I'm giving Marr most of the credit for The Smiths' success.

Jeff Lynne is one of the worst things to happen to music after synthesizers and drum machines.

Neil Peart's lyrics is why he is included awful crap most notably "Tom Sawyer"...woof!
