Dirty Mind is another classic. Underrated electro funk mini masterpiece.

I think I saw a copy of Dirty Mind at the local record store recently. If it's still there when I visit on Sunday, I'll consider picking it up! Along with Purple Rain.

Alright I'll look for that, but if I find Purple Rain sooner I'll get that instead. Or I'll just listen to them online or something. Whatever.

Usually I really get turned off by 80's pop music, but what I've heard from Prince sounds so damn good. Maybe he can make me appreciate the 80's pop scene a bit more.

Yeah, I hate most of the 80s pop music, too, but Prince became one of my very favorite artists of all time. I liked him very much from the beginning when I started listening to him just like you. And what is more, he is not great only during the 80s, his 90s and 2000s stuff is brilliant, too.

Awesome! I'm excited to hear more of his work.

I got a nice copy of Purple Rain today so I'll play that later tonight. They also had copies of Controversy and Around the World in a Day, but I'll start small. If I like Purple Rain enough I'll start checking out his body of work more thoroughly.

I've started working chronologically through Prince's discography, although I'm not sure I intend to go all the way through it (we'll see).

For You was forgettable, self-titled didn't do a whole lot for me (but I intend to listen to it again sometime), but Dirty Mind was pretty great. At first his voice being so different sounding than it does on 1999/Purple Rain was a bit of a turn off, but I warmed up to it on my second listen. I'll drop off more of my thoughts as I listen to more.

First, I'm glad you are interested in him. On the other hand, you got to be really into his work to enjoy the first two albums. Dirty Mind is good, you'll like Controversy, too. And then it starts: All of his 80s masterpieces are as good as 1999 and Purple Rain. You'll love all of them. After Diamonds and Pearls (1991) he gets a little worse because he becomes a ''slave'' to his label and fills the albums like Come and The Black album with whatever comes to his mind just to finish the contract (there is some good stuff in these albums, though). Then, the second half of the 90s is quite better. The beginning of the 2000s is strange with the jazzy Rainbow Children and 3 instrumental albums. In 2006 he's back on the top with 3121 and since then he has pretty good stuff, too. What is more, in this moment he has TONS (around 500) of unreleased songs, so we are going to listen to many more good music of his.

Yeah. Only listened to his first two albums because I like to ease into an artist. I do it with a lot of artists I probably shouldn't!

Most of the phases of his career you describe sound interesting...like...I'm interested to hear Prince even when he's not at his best, because it still sounds like it could be fascinating.

I picked up Around the World In A Day. It's nice, although it does seem a bit more patchy than 1999 or Purple Rain. Condition of the Heart is a bit odd and Tamborine doesn't do much for me. They could grow on me though, and there is enough immediately pleasing that I'll be spinning the record in the future.

Hahahh, I do that with the artists I like, too.

''Around the world'' needs to be played a few times to become good. I like Condition of the heart a lot, although it's a little odd like you said. But as I said, 1999 and Diamonds & Pearls are his easiest to get into albums. All the others are more complicated. For example, I had to listen to Sign o' the times around 5 times before I realized the greatness of the album.
And Around the world's Raspberry Barett is just a masterpiece. I don't know if you realized how good is it from the first listen. I love that song, it's one of my very favorite Prince songs.

Nah, I noticed that Raspberry Beret was a good song the first time I listened to the album. Probably the standout from the album for me! Anyway, I'll keep moving forward and relistening to previous albums. I'm looking forward to getting Sign "o" the Times because I've heard so much good about it.

Yes, indeed.
And the Sign o' the times is a hell of an album, actually, it's my second favorite album of his, but I still think that it's a little overrated such as Purple Rain (I mean overspoken, I don't know if there's such a word, but I mean that people are talking too much about these two albums as he hasn't got other that good albums).
