The Evolution of Music: Accident, or Adaptation?

I'm giving this thread a bump for a few reasons:
Firstly, I'm hoping that there are some new ideas about this subject, and it's good to give ourselves a break from thinking about a certain topic, because we can return with new ideas.

Also, it had sparked perhaps one of the best discussions I've come across on music banter, and I'm hoping it can be replicated!
