I don't think I explained it before, I may have. But I went with The Smiths mostly for the fact that I haven't had too much exposure to The Cure. Which brings the question: Where would be a good start to get a good introduction to The Cure?

EDIT: Looking back, I said I didn't favor The Cure too much, probably with how I went about listening to them. Maybe I was introduced to them incorrectly.

The Head on the door album is the one to get. It covers a lot of their styles and does so brilliantly. The pop songs are catchy, the slow morbd one is the slowest and most morbid but tuneful one they did like that, it's got a corking pacey rocker, a silly one and some exquisite weird ones that hover inbetween the poppy stuff and the morbid stuff. It's a wonderful album. I can't praise it higly enough.

I would say Disintegration is a good place to start as it's their best album, though Head on the Door, as mentioned by Flying Pig, might be a good starting point as well.

Disintigration's a bit over-rated imo which isn't to say I don't think it's a great album I do but it's a bit one dimensional and the songwritig isn't inspired throughout. Altogether it's a bit much for a newcomer to the Cure to take on board esp. as it's a long slow album.

A/w I've been thinkig about this thread a fair bit over the past two days as I've recently been going through a revitalised phase vis-a-vis my love for The Cure and Morrissey. I've been investigating some of the stuff I'm not familar with on spotify and I've realised that I prefer the things I love about The Smiths more than I love the things I love about The Cure but that I dislike a few things about Morrissey in a way that I don't dislike anything about Cpt. Bob. Morrissey says very strident things that I don't identify with most inparitcular Meat is murder and all that dodgy flirtation with extreme right-wing politics which really puts me off him even though I love him too and there's a least 1/2 a dozen songs by The Smiths I prefer to any Cure songs.
One way of sorting this matter out is to compare their careers from the point of the first 4 yrs. vis-a-vis The Cure and the only 4 yrs. vis-a-vis The Smiths.
If The Cure had split up after the 4th album which they sort of did then their legacy wouldn't be as good as The Smiths esp. when you take into account The Smiths also put out nearly another 2 albums worth of material that didn't go on any of the 4 studio albums.
