She didn't have to copy anyone to change her style some. She didn't really start out R&B it was her first few records had more of West Indian vibe to it.

When Jive had FeFe Dobson, they wanted to make her into what Rihanna is now but she didn't want that and when she signed with the label she's on now. She was allowed to keep the style she wanted.

Rihanna just does whatever her management feeds to her and if they give her songs that change style since she releases albums so frequently then she will happily do it to keep up her fan base.

Yes, she's originally from Barbados but her music career started in the US.

The difference is that Jimmy was already playing stateside before gaining success across the pond.
