Why does the mainstream industry only want a select few to be popular?

Tightrope? It was used for like an Old Navy commercial or something too.

Idk, maybe I'm just being naive. Most people don't get anywhere near scratching the surface of her musical accomplishments which is why I said she is representative of the 1% and to me that is enough to be considered a star.

She's no Beyonce or JLo, but she's definitely not fighting for scraps from the table of the music industry. What is an appropriate title if not star? How do you label these kinds of artists?

That does not necessarily mean she is "widely known"

Someone who is widely known is someone who is an international star or very popular which she is not.

She's not selling out arenas, duh! When everybody in America has fifteen copies of all her albums, MAYBE we can say she's a little popular.

Maybe I just don't know how the ranking system works well enough. Being no 5. out of a ton of artists seems like it would mean you are pretty popular to me.

Also, you can be underrated and popular, the two are not mutually exclusive. When I think of underrated I think of someone not being recognized for their talent; not their popularity. I suppose I could see it from your way too, I just don't use it in that sense.

You said she was "widely known" and she is not widely known. A

Also, it is important to note, she made no.5 based on the artists that released an album the week she released hers. So if a bunch of indie artists released their albums the same week as hers, naturally she would sell more than them.
