List of best-selling music artists - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Janet Jackson has sold more than The Beach Boys, The Who, and Bob Dylan?! :yikes:

To be fair, I'm sure there were a lot less people in America when those groups were still popular.

You have to compare the two columns: Claimed sales vs. Total certified units.

The older the band the harder it is to certify the sales based on the technology available.

Notice how the difference between the two numbers gets closer the more modern the artist is.

Right. I'm on my phone and didn't notice those categories because of the browser. Makes more sense now.

You might want to check the source for that 100 million sales for Janet Jackson too.It comes from an article from a regional website which claimed she's sold 100 million recordings, nothing substantial.

Plus let's not forget that list counts albums and singles as the same thing, she might have higher numbers than Bob Dylan but I bet his album sales are vastly bigger than hers.

The problem is that there's a difference between an iconic moment and a person being an icon.

I think of John Lydon as being an iconic person for the reason that he made 2 groundbreaking albums in 2 different genres and regardless of your opinion of him you'd be hard pressed to find too many people who have done that.

However one of his iconic moments was when the Sex Pistols appeared on The Grundy Show with Lydon swearing and basically announcing the arrival of punk in the mainstream and whipping up the media and the establishment to mass hysteria.

However just because I consider that an iconic moment in music history doesn't mean I don't consider Lydon an icon for doing it.

The problem with your arguments are that they come off very one sided and snobbish.

You don't listen to any other music besides rock and thats fine BUT its foolish to sit here and insist no other artists outside the rock genre is not an Icon (just because you don't care for them or don't listen to their music)

It is very snobbish.

You constantly site Wikipedia in your other arguments but since this is Janet Jackson Wikipedia is suddenly unreliable?

Janet Jackson is one of the biggest selling artists of all time certified by RIAA and Soundscan.

But you dont have to believe it if you dont want to because the receipts don't lie regardless of what you think.

Janet even has more Billboard Top entries than MJ and Whitney

Get outside you rock bubble and you might get more educated on other acts but it is not just you it is this entire forum.

And why does the colour of your skin mean anything. If I like the music, that's it. Not because their black.

If you look in the lounge at the racially driven topics then you will understand why I made that statement.

This is a very racially insensitive site.

Once again, I am not saying every single person but it absurd to insist it is not to some degree.

He's already gone on record as saying that he listens to far more than just rock, and after seeing him post for five years, I can vouch for that. He certainly listens to a higher percentage of rock and rock-derived music, but he shows far more diversity in his musical taste than you do at least. You're just generalizing right now based on your perceptions of the forum at large, which is actually pretty racist on your part.

And your assertion that this site is racially insensitive is also ridiculous. A lot of people here tend to take your side when it comes to debates on race. You just mostly notice the people who disagree with you, which is natural, but unfair.
