ITT: someone who is EXTREMELY biased towards a certain few genres tries to tell other people to not be biased towards a certain few genres

LOL

You're just generalizing right now based on your perceptions of the forum at large, which is actually pretty racist on your part.

And your assertion that this site is racially insensitive is also ridiculous. A lot of people here tend to take your side when it comes to debates on race. You just mostly notice the people who disagree with you, which is natural, but unfair.

My point is, I am not surprised by these responses on Janet Jackson because this is a forum that mostly listens to rock music which you have pointed out and agree with yourself.

So DITTO,

They probably will not consider her to be an Icon but that does not necessarily mean she is not an Icon.

The logic that some members here were arguing was...

"Oh since none of us can name a Janet Jackson song or listen to her music that means she is not an Icon"

That is a ridiculous argument.

Why?

Because none of them probably don't even listen to her music or are familiar with the iconic things she has done to make such an argument.

When someone told me Tom Waits was innovative I said no he was not and then they gave me examples of innovative things he had done and I quickly became educated. Some of these members are still snobbishly stuck in their views despite the receipts that show JJ is an Icon but don't get where I am coming from twisted.

It is nothing racist about pointing out that observation.

My taste in music is very diverse and I am very eagered to learn about other artists outside my favorite genre. I don't see that same eagerness from the others here which is clearly reflects the lack of activity in the other forums outside the rock ones.

If non-whatever-her-music-is fans can't name a single one of her songs, then how big of an icon can she be? I think an icon's fame should be able to cross genre boundaries, or else what's the point of calling her an icon? I don't listen to Beyonce, but I can still bring the chorus of "Crazy In Love" to mind without much effort. I don't listen to Frank Sinatra at all, but I can still name several of his songs, and know a little bit of how a few of them go.

And I stand by what I said about Vanilla Ice being a bigger icon than Janet.

Being able to recall a song does not make that singer an Icon. It involves much more. There are a ton of songs I can recall but that does not mean those singers are Icon's.

There are a ton of rock legends that are Icons but if you were to ask me to name one of their songs, I wouldn't be able too.

Does that make them any less of an Icon?

No.

This is a very weak argument that doesn't prove anything because I can ask this question from other people from a different forum and get way different responses.

You make it seem like Janet is this unknown act and she is not based on the a few of the responses from this thread from other members who don't just listen to rock music, its clear she is not an unknown act.

Its embarrassing you would compare her to Vanilla Ice (who I honestly can not recall a single song from or any iconic moments/albums etc)

First of all. You. Are. Lying. You know "Ice Ice Baby" just like every person on this planet. That is one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons of the past few decades, and to pretend otherwise is nonsense. However you feel about Vanilla Ice, or that song, it has made him an icon that far outshines much more deserving artists, including Janet Jackson. If you don't want to accept this, I guess because you absolutely refuse to give any credit to any artist you don't like, then have fun being wrong.

Secondly. Alright, so if her music isn't well-known outside of certain circles, then what does make her an icon? She doesn't have any videos that anyone outside of those same limited circles would know. Or performances. What makes her an icon?

Oh so I AM the liar

Did I call you a liar when you couldn't name a Janet Jackson song?

The rudeness and the hypocrisy of this forum is astounding.

I go on a ton of other music forums and they acknowledge Janet Jackson as an Icon.

I am done with this discussion, you can think what you want to think

Is it okay for a newb to tell y'all to STFU about this shit?
