CDs were created in a completely different century than 2014!

I have to say, I have no idea specifically what came out in 2010 versus 2011, 2009 or any other nearby year, but I do know that I can't remember any year of my life when lots of great music wasn't being released. So I'm sure there was plenty of good stuff in 2010.

Likewise, 2014 seemed pretty good to me. Just scanning through my iTunes by date I see albums I really enjoyed by Too Many Zooz, Tipper, Okiru, Mr. Bill, Liars, King Dude, Indian, Gridlink, Earth, Bongripper, Benjamin Booker, Bast, Babymetal and Actress.

Do any years stand out to you when you look back? I see 2010 as today's equivalent of how some people view 1991 etc.

I forgot to mention so much stuff in my first post that I just really realized what an amazing year it has actually been in music considering this is my first full year that I've really went out and actually discovered a bunch of new stuff on my own. So maybe other people had better years but for me it has really been the year that has truly opened my mind up to so much new music.

I'm with Jans in essence, though I do generally know which years albums come out. 1991 might stick out to a lot of people because there were quite a few critically acclaimed albums released that year, which were also hugely popular. But it's certainly no better than 1992 in my experience.

If you want to look at it from a cultural/canon perspective, there is definite merit in what you say James. 2010 would certainly be one of those years. But to me personally (purely out of coincidence) I prefer every year that has followed it in terms of my own listening history.

Not really. Maybe 1988 or 1989, but I think that pretty much has to do with the fact that I was an 11-12 year old then just beginning to really explore music in any kind of depth and my mind was more easily blown. When I try to look at it without that filter, I'm pretty sure 2014 or 2010 or 1991 or any other year was probably just as good.

I'm curious, which albums are the ones you guys consider the landmark albums of 2010?

I think we all agree, really. I can't think of a single moment in time where I was dissatisfied with the music being released, it's just that when I look back 2010 stands out. All years are likely of equal merit, but what makes a year stick in the memory is how 'of the time' the music feels and how big of an impact it made on both an individual's personal life and the world around them. When you think about years don't really mean anything anyway, and the last day of 2010 and the first day of 2011 are close to identical if looked at objectively.
It's weird this argument persists in music but hardly pops up in other mediums like painting and literature, where serious arguments could be made about their merit in a modern world.

These aren't necessarily all my favourites, but they are what the cool kids could call "canon" i.e. albums that are pretty much considered to be great by most people.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
High Violet
The Suburbs
Teen Dream
Halcyon Digest
The ArchAndroid
Cosmogramma
The Age of Adz

Heh. Well, I asked for it. Aside from Deerhunter—who I still have never heard—and Flying Lotus—who I sort of like—I would say I'm not a fan of most of what I've heard by any of those artists. To be fair though, MBDTF is the only one of those albums I've listened to all the way through.

I think no matter your opinion on MBDTF, it is undoubtedly an album that will be remembered for a very long time.
Have One On Me is another big album from that year that really stands out to me.
