Default Modern Influences

Eurovision isn't really famous for sounding "fresh" or "modern" (with many countries, year-to-year, entering dated songs that may sound catchy but offer nothing new to the scene), but this year three songs in particular sound fresher to me than the rest. They are bass heavy and just the right amount of mysterious.

Enjoy Belgium's entry, which I can't stop listening to. Kind of reminds us of Sia or Lorde but his voice is different enough and since this 18-year-old composed the song and wrote it himself, I'm impressed.

Next up is the adorable but somewhat weird Aminata from Latvia. I want to love this song, truly I do, but it doesn't stick with me as much as I'd like. I forget it easily and have a hard time remembering the chorus. That usually spells disaster for a Eurovision entry. Still, there is something cool about it.

Her vocals are a good example of what I would consider "current." I'm very into her voice and I think this will be cool, albeit forgettable, during the show.

Since songs can only be 3 minutes long, I wonder what the shorter version will be like. I hope she doesn't cut out the electronica-fused interlude bit.

Switzerland's entry is weak, to be honest. Lyrically, vocally, and instrumentally just in general it's very bland. But at least it has something a bit more intriguing about it then the usual generic stuff. I think Melanie's technique will improve before May and I'm looking forward to that.

That's all for today

I think so as well. I say send the guy! Not only did he write his own tune but his mother made his traditional outfit. He is reindeer farmer from Nothern Sweden which you do not see so often in Eurovision.

Most likely though we will be sending Måns Zelmerlöw's tune "Heroes" which also has a good show:

Default Songs Not in English

As with other years, only a handful of entries are not sung in English. I'm always particularly fond of these and I love to support countries that are proud enough to keep the songs in the mother tongue.

Macedonia's entry is catchy, if not a little generic. Oh well! I think it has a good energy and hope to see it at the finals.

Always lovely to hear some of the local language.

People seem to be really happy with Romania's choice this year as well. Although Voltaj's voice is pure and nice in the studio version, we haven't seen him sing live yet. I guess the success of his show will kind of depend on his live quality. I'm excited for it. It's been a while since Romanian sent something in Romanian so I'm very happy for them. The song is pretty cool and also a bit generic but pleasant and soothing enough. I'm told it also carries a message.

Sadly that message will be lost on 99% of the viewers. All of this leads me to believe Romania doesn't really want to win this year. But that's okay.

Serbia gets my vote for best song not in English. So outrageous and colorful, gotta love a fat lady singing surrounded by a some interpretive dance. I think the song is catchy and wonderful, and her voice is clearly viable for a live show. With some updated production quality, this song could go far this year.

Haha, those dancers. EXCELLENT

Last and very least is Portugal's underwhelming song, "Há um mar que nos separa." I love her voice and I think the song has potential, it's definitely better than some of the stuff they have sent in recent years. Still, this is all 90s.

Best of luck to her!

I agree with you. If punk is about going against the norm of society, then what is more punk than them? I At least they are singing something that means something to them.

Lilja, you were so right about Mans! Sweden is indeed sending Heroes. I like it, but it will so depend on whether or not he pulls all those effects off!

Yes. It is not a bad song really. I just wish Fjällgren's had made it because it represented a culture rather than a genre. But that is me . I read that Zelmerlöw's show may have to be changed because of the requirements for his projecter..which would suck since the show is why that song is so popular...

I hear you. I've already heard that Serbia has decided to sing their song in English rather than Serbian. It broke my heart! </3

Update: Romania and Macedonia will sing in English too. What a shame.
