Because you have not seen the face of God until you listen to this album.

You think you're getting away from pretentious music and then list Talk Talk and Deep Purple, I don't even

I despise threads like this because people are so incapable of being unbiased in their selections that it just becomes pretty laughable to me. "Required listening to be a true music fan" should be limited to like 10 albums tops, not 100 of Frownland's weirdest albums that he considers "important" except are only important to the most obscure of subgenres.

To be fair, there should be no albums you're required to listen to. I had been a true music fan (as far as I would understand the term) for over thirty years before I even joined here, and not listening to any of the albums so far did not detract one jot from my enjoyment of my music. It's actually quite a pretentious thing to say, isn't it? That you can't be considered a true music fan unless you listen to this and this and this, and don't forget this.

Not trying to get at you Frown, but it really is a little arrogant that someone should think you're not a proper music fan just because you haven't heard particular albums that they think you should. Look at 1001 albums: there are selections there, many of them, that I could quite happily die without ever having heard.

Obviously people are biased because of their tastes.
I tried hard and listed very few of my favourite albums and some I haven't listened to for years, some I don't even really like, but still consider important.
What's pretentious about Deep Purple?

You expect people to be unbiased in a subjective field such as music? That's crazy man. Of course I'm listing important albums that are only important to their genre because I kind of see a die hard music fan as someone who samples from all genres to at least form an opinion on them.

Here are some "unbiased" selections to please your whiny ass. Maybe you can contribute to the thread and show us what true objectivity is.

Van Halen - Van Halen
Guns 'n Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Genesis - Selling England By the Pound
Joe Satriani - Surfing With the Alien
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic

Should listen to, not must. Ffs people just contribute to the thread instead of bitching about it.

I understand what it feels like to have to go on defensive because someone called out your thread for being bad. It's a hard thing to go through. But at least show some dignity and refrain from passive aggressive ****posts like that where you drop a Van Halen album and think you're making a point.

And yes one should expect people to be unbiased when making lists about albums that ALL music listeners should try rather than people who are obsessed with finding the next most-weird thing out there. I don't see my way of listening to music as the objective "best" way...but you do, so that's why your lists are just terrible and borderline insulting in this context.

Going just by the music Deep Purple is pretty much quintessential dad rock for me, musically the opposite of pretentious.
