During the mid to late 90s I went through a period where I'd listen only to trance music. Nothing else. Because I didn't consider other genres to be cool enough. Looking back it was a pretty stupid thing to do, and an even stupider point of view. But it didn't last. And I doubt the OP's phase will last either.

When I was a kid music was just there it existed (I suppose much like comedy) then out of the blue one song shattered it and struck a great cord with me. It was playing on the radio in my local shop and from then on my ears were open and I could find music. I never knew the song for many many years and it was just a tune in my head.

So with music in my head, then someone in Primary/Elementary who was into Nirvana forced me to say a band that was a fave, I took the one group I listened to the most and felt the strongest about....that band....was Madness. I was 8 years old in 1999 and I said MADNESS. By the way I still love Madness.

I formed a musical taste from then on. When I was 13 it changed and I found a bunch of different stuff mainly comedy/parody songs. Come 18 I WAS HEAVILY INTO NEW WAVE! I was then introduced to some good Punk, Funk and rock.

That was me for a long time. I am 27 now yet while I am still firmly planted in New wave I am still seeking out more of it and finding it. I admit I am narrow in my taste really but when that lightning bolt hits me between my ears ITS MAGIC. That is what I live for now with music the musical bolt of "HOLY **** I WANNA LISTEN TO THIS FOREVER!"

PS that song that made me like music I found it on a CD in a charity shop I used to work in, was bored saw an interesting CD (think it came from a donation of a guys stuff his wife brought him cos she found out he was cheating on her...pity....cos he had good musical taste.) I popped it in to see what it was like and BAM! 13 years had caught up to me! MUSICAL BOLT RIGHT BACK IN MY BRAIN!

THE ENTIRE ALBUM IS AMAZING. The song was "Avenging Angels" by the band Space the album is Tin planet AND ITS STILL LIGHTNING TO MY BRAIN!

I am happier with draught of liking stuff cos when I do like something I will act like its better than a tuning fork in sliced bread.

PPS My comment on comedy, I never used to like comedy I just "didn't get it" then one day I am watching a new sitcom ( I watched comedies but didn't laugh and felt bad for it) then out of no were I burst out laughing and had one of the hardest laughs of my young age. The show was Titus and Titus is actually a really dark comedic sitcom so I think the dark humour resonated with me, still sticks with me.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I have a good collection of music that I've picked up recently, and I store it away in pretty much every music app I have, whether it be on my phone or whatever. I'm constantly returning to songs I liked from ages ago, and then I realise how cool it was. So in a sense I'm just re-discovering what I already knew. It's funny because sometimes I find myself listening to maybe only 3-4 songs at the most per album. I never had the patience to sit through one LP, whether it be my short attention span, or my need to listen to something different each track. I can dart between so many genres it just becomes a blur of different sound. These days I've been sticking to just a few albums which keep me going for a long time. The music that I find is stuff that I love and I'll listen to for ages.

I think you should not worry. I do not bind such things with age. Just there are periods in life when quantity turns into quality.

I'm in my 50s. My taste has continually broadened as I've aged. <shrugs>

I have a library of four thousand songs and I rate every song from one to five. I noticed a similar trend in that I downrated many of my old favorite songs, but kept five stars on my all time favorites that just don't quit.

I wouldn't say my situation is that my taste is getting narrow. If anything my library is more diverse, but in regards to my songs, only the strongest will survive.
