Default Your 2019 in Music

We're at the end of the year and instead of AOTY lists, I thought it might be interesting to take a wider look at what this year in music was like for you. I've got a batch of questions below, feel free to answer some or all of them. Feel free to add any other tidbits too, if it's good I'll add it to the OP.

What was your overall impression of 2019's music?

What was your favourite album of 2019?

What was your least favourite album this year?

Which album did you listen to the most in 2019?

Who is your favourite new artist of 2019?

What's your song of the year?

Which genre(s) had the best releases this year?

Which genres (from any year) did you listen to the most in 2019?

Have you found any new favourite artists or albums that weren't released in 2019 this year?

Did you pick up or leave behind any new tastes that might have surprised your past self?

Did you see any shows? Which were the best ones?

If you make music, how have you evolved as an artist this year?

What was your biggest musical disappointment of 2019?

Biggest musical surprise of the year?

Have your listening habits changed at all this year? For better or for worse?

What are some albums from this year that you think we'll look back on as classics?

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.

Ghosteen

Biggest musical surprise of the year?

Iggy's awesome live show, despite the fact he's.....72!

Have your listening habits changed at all this year? For better or for worse?

not really. maybe i use mixcloud a bit more. but i always liked listening to hand picked playlists/mixtapes so its not something really new. i just like mixloud's interface and have found enough users that i like their stuff so now it works smoothly enough. My main way of listening to music stays the same: listening to albums.

What are some albums from this year that you think we'll look back on as classics?

none that i heard.

Volker Kriegel

Did you pick up or leave behind any new tastes that might have surprised your past self?

In 2018 I metaled out like crazy. 2019 not so much. I’m sure I missed a lot of metal releases. Gettin old maybe.

Been really broke and it’s a long way out of Loserton.

N/A

What was your biggest musical disappointment of 2019?

See above

The way hip hop is evolving

It’s not better or worse really but I’m not going to obsess over new music as much this year.

What are some albums from this year that you think we'll look back on as classics?

Norman ****ing Rockwell.

It might take 3 or 4 decades for Coin Memphis to get its place because enough time will have to pass to where the albums that it sits with don’t have the advantage of already passing the test of time. So I might be dead before it gets it’s due. **** the entire human race might be dead come to think of it.

I wonder how 1000 Gecs will age. At first I thought it was a freakishly amusing novelty but now I see how it fits in with bubblegum pop and all that.

They’re just damn good pop songwriters. It’s hard to deny their talent even if the music is goofy as hell.

What was your overall impression of 2019's music?
Legit Techno and Black Metal are as strong as ever.

What was your favourite album of 2019?
Man, this is tough. I'll take a few from different genres just because I can't put one over the other.

Death Spell Omega "The Furnaces of Palingenesia"
Puce Mary "The Drought'
Joshua Sabin "Sutarti"
Restive Plaggona "Trouble Sociale"

What was your least favourite album this year?
I feel awful for this, but I was expecting to love Ansome's new album and I really only like 1 song from it.

Which album did you listen to the most in 2019?
I was late to "Cocoa Sugar", but oh my god it's track after track of pure gold. Defintely best album of 2018, just didn't know till 2019.

Who is your favourite new artist of 2019?
Karim Maas. Really great dark and atmospheric DnB. Did a collab album with Pessimist that was cold as ****.

What's your song of the year?
"Lost" by Boy Harsher. Saw them play it live at my favorite run down club too.

Which genre(s) had the best releases this year?
Techno and Black Metal, definitely.

Which genres (from any year) did you listen to the most in 2019?
See above

Have you found any new favourite artists or albums that weren't released in 2019 this year?
Again, "Cocoa Sugar" by Young Fathers.

Did you pick up or leave behind any new tastes that might have surprised your past self?
Yeah, Trance.

Did you see any shows? Which were the best ones?
Stereolab gave me watery eyes. The crowd was mostly old fogies who waited for over a decade to see them, but I was 16 when I started listening to them, and that's when they went on hiatus (I'm 28 now, oh ****). Lataetia seemed really humbled by how long people waited for them to come back. Fuzzy feelings all around.

If you make music, how have you evolved as an artist this year?
I don't make it per se, I just play around with gear. I've went all hardware and mostly modular.

What was your biggest musical disappointment of 2019?
Ansome "Hounds of The Harbor"

Biggest musical surprise of the year?
Karenn's new album was so good that even my friends who don't care for Techno like it. Was expecting them to flub it again trying to replicate their live performances.

Have your listening habits changed at all this year? For better or for worse?
Not too much, pretty similar to 2018. The only difference is that I'm more versed in Techno and Black Metal.

What are some albums from this year that you think we'll look back on as classics?

Alberich "Quantized Angel"

A breath of fresh air for Death Industrial, and I keep coming back to it as well as do other people it seems.
