Secondly, no, the words are not deep. I give you that some bands do come up with very artistic ways to express their feelings, but that is not the case for the majority of the genre. Next, the middle of your post is just gabbering filler, so I won't say anythign to that. And finally, if you think lyrical content deems music into its genres, then you shouldn't be listening to music. I could play some punk song (or whatever other genre you wish) and in one version sing about killing the president, and then the next time sing about going to the bar. Just because I change what the song is about, doesn't mean I changed the song/genre. If you were to take the words out of all music, you could still classify all of it correctly because of one thing, it being my major point. Lyrics have nothing to do with the genre of MUSIC. It is in fact the MUSIC that deviates what kind of MUSIC it really is.
frist of all i think you should be more open to genres of music that you personally dont like. just becasue you don't connect with the music doesn't make it crap. secondly, lyrics are a HUGE part of the identity of the song. the lyrics are what the listener is able to connect to. lyrics about things that actually matter, that actually make people feel, is what separates a good song from a great song. case in point, take something like good charlotte vs. brand new. both artists are decent musically (i'm just using gc as an example, and personally i think brand nre kicks their ass lyrically and musically) but gc's lyrics are crap. simple rhyming lines about rich people whining. who the **** can relate to that? it means nothing. now compare that to brand new. on one album they convey pain, depression, sacrifice, regret, these topics trigger our own thoughts on the matter, and bring out our own experiences. in my opinion, if you say that lyrics don't matter, then you really dont appreciate musicians. bands are so much more than a group of people playing instruments in harmony. they're poets, they speak to the public about thigns that they are passionate about. bands that last, that have a real impact, are bands that really believe in what they are singing about, and really feel it as they are singing it. and for the most part, emo artists do just that.

Ok, lets clear this up. I didn't say lyrics dont' matter in general, I said they don't deem what genre music goes into. That, obviously, is the music's job. Of course lyrics are what the audience connects with, it is definitly what makes them feel. I agree totally with that. If I didn't, then I really would be an ignorant **** who knows nothing. I simply say that lyrics don't put music into genres. Maybe sub-genres, but that's another story.
To Jibber: I appreciate your reply, as it was one that was well stated and thought out. Nice work.

To Broken heart guy: It's pretty pathetic that you had to take spelling into account with my posts. That just says you have nothing left to say and have to make yourself sound smart by being some kind of want-to-be english scholar. We aren't in school, and no one cares if you misspell words. Honestly, I think we are pretty close to being on the same page, but are missing the connection. I like emo, I'm just arguing that it's not the lyrical content that makes it that, but rather the style of music, as in the style the instruments are playing.
P.S. Current emo albums I own (most recently listened to) Sunny Day RealEstate, Piebald, Saves the Day (the old stuff) Dashboard Confessional (the old stuff) Brand New(close enough), and Bright Eyes(I don't care if you don't like him).

Alright banonbush I can see your point but I still disagree with it I mean of the bands that I enjoy and consider emo there are extreme musical diffrences but it is the similarities in the music that tie them together for example Dashboard is very calm usually acoustic just relaxing on the ears The early november (although having a large amount of acoustic stuff) can be really fast and sometimes loud but the lyrics are very similar. And as for the spelling issue I am not a wannabe english teacher I am just a normal emo kid who writes a lot off poetry and stuff so crappy spelling/grammer stick out to me Sorry. So can we call a truce

Hey there, I'm new here, but I thought I'd reply to this post. I listen to a lot of emo, but I'm pretty open to a lot of other music types, even grindcore deathmetal heehee. But anyway

My favorite for sure emo song is I woke up in a Car by Something Corporate.

I would, however, like to argue that Iris, by the Goo Goo Dolls, is emo, and it's my favorite song of all time.

Ok, I"m glad that buisness is over with. As for the spelling mistakes, I'm the Editor in chief of the newpaper at my school, and I get jammed down the throat with spelling mistakes everyday. I'm usually about done with correctly gramar/spelling by the end of the day, so thanks for excusing it. Also to thisnew guy, broken but smiling. I don't know either of those songs, but whatever. Like what you like.

You don't know Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls???? Man, you are missing out. And Something Corporate is one of the most talented group of musicians/songwriters I've heard in a while
