I've been digging Beirut lately. And some good ol' Say Hi To Your Mom, for when I'm hopeful, wistful, or sleepy.

If you type 'A Beggar's Opera' into YouTube there's a few friends of mine performing a live lounge-esque cover of one of thier favourite tracks. So - thoughts please - no holds barred..

There's more stuff on these lads at myspace.com/abeggarsopera - including their original songs (not unplugged) etc..

oh, and here's what the reviewers say:

"…Their music that has this dichotomy of devil-may-care decadence and polished discernment. The two sharp-looking blond brothers share vocal duties, harmonising and singing great modern pop songs sculpted from bits of The Libertines, The Beatles and Dylan. Judging by their performance tonight [maroon]A Beggar’s Opera[/maroon] have the ability to rocket into stardom. Their rock 'n' roll scowls will soon burn in the hearts of female fans and one bright day their songs will be sung anthem-like at festivals."
BBC Berkshire

'…Early Rolling Stones and Berlin era Beatles - They make us smile.' Club Velocity

‘"...It's easy to see why few break into the mainstream with so many bands competing for record deals. [maroon]A Beggar's Opera[/maroon] are a different matter. It is only a matter of time before they are spotted and signed up. For now they are unspoilt and raw and our little secret.' The Evening Standard

‘[maroon]A Beggar's Opera[/maroon] are the new rock 'n' roll. Just you wait 'til the NME laps them up’ BBC Berkshire

‘…Excellent songs with reference points spearing through The Beatles, Bob Dylan with a smattering of The Kinks toward a more up-to-date, more melodic Libertines. They possessed the kind of confidence that a band who had been touring for years would have.’ Decode Magazine

[maroon]'A Beggar’s Opera[/maroon], the band that everyone’s talking about at the moment were fantastic live, a rare blend of alt rock and indie music left me and the crowd speechless.' Mario Gambardella, Killing April Records

Santa Dog - Belle De Jouer EP damn fine indie music with a real pop tunesmithery. Imagine the Lightning Seeds revamped, overhauled and supercharged for 2007.

National Heroes are definitely a band to watch out for as well, they've got a brilliant EP for download off their myspace.

They're a new name to me but apparently they've been around for a while and heve played some pretty prestigious gigs including a residency at the Bar & Grill in Hoxton. They've got that assured looseness that only really good bands get after they've played a lot. Well worth checking out.

Thumbs up I have been ipodding...

lekiddo - (all the songs are about lobsters!!!)
chichino - every little thing
art brut - modern art makes me want to rock out
santadog - belle de jour
albert hammond jr. - everone gets a star
national heroes - boys of britain
interpol - leif eriksson.

They are all great and I advise them, even if my eclectic tastes don't spread so nicely over all genres.
