The publicity it received in the early 90's was very good, making many top 10 lists, but has waned recently, because it’s one of those albums that’s decent, but derivative.

what exactly is this album derivative of?

I mean, you hear about Interpol being derivative of Joy Division, Bloc Party derivative of Gang of Four - how is Loveless derivative? You say it sounds like a fusion of The Jesus and Mary Chain and the Cocteau Twins' music, which is debatable to begin with as there's plenty of other influences at work. But even so, that's a combination of two ideas into a new one - in other words, not derivative, just musical evolution and progression.

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-07-2007 11:23 AM

Loveless sounds nothing like the Jesus & Mary Chain.

If you're going to say they ripped off the Mary Chain because of the guitar feedback thing you may as well say the ripped off Hendrix.

Pitchfork: New My Bloody Valentine Album Due This Year??

almauro 11-07-2007 01:34 PM

MBV attempt to be more trance-like by repeating the same riffs over and over, but if you can't hear J&MC's massive influence overshadowing "Loveless", then all I can say is ignorance is bliss and enjoy their music. As I said it's not a bad record. IMO it’s more of a derivation of "Psycho Candy's" pop melodies and dirty distorted guitars, than an "evolution".

You make a good point and let me try to answer it this way. When I hear an original song by a great band, I'm unable to distinguish the musical influences. For example Radiohead and "Paranoid Android". I've listened to that song dozens of times, and I can't honestly say it sounds like anybody else but Radiohead. Yeah it's got prog rock, alt rock, new wave, and other sub-genres in it, but it's uniquely Radiohead and sounds like no other band. When I listen to MBV, i begin to lose interest half way through a song and start thinking, that sounds like J&MC, or they remind me of Cocteau Twins, or as some other posters noted, Bauhaus or Sonic Youth. Great bands absorb influences into something new, whereas bands that fall short, wear them on their sleeve.

Wierdly enough, Matt (not burns but the 7ft tall one) in his and mine weekly music conversation mentioned that they might be going to some festival somewhere in California, I don't remember the name of it or when it is, but if you are up to I suppose you drive there or something.

cardboard adolescent 11-07-2007 03:50 PM

Coachella? That rumor's being going around for a while. I'd much much much rather see them in a club than at a festival.

Kevorkian Logic 11-07-2007 03:58 PM

yea, that sounds right. I agree they would be better in a club, but I don't really think you have much of a choice.

cardboard adolescent 11-07-2007 04:09 PM

Well the whole Coachella thing is unconfirmed, if they do have a reunion tour I'd imagine they would tour all over rather than just play one festival.

O'Bannion 11-12-2007 03:09 PM

Loveless is one of the most beautiful and moving albums I've ever heard. PERIOD. Just don't listen to it on a road trip, I made that mistake a couple of years ago.

Brock_West 11-13-2007 07:50 PM

funny that this topic is 2 yrs old now.

I just recently started listening to them but I really like them.

cardboard adolescent 11-13-2007 07:52 PM

It is funny that people would talk about bands that formed more than two decades ago before you started listening to them.

Brock_West 11-13-2007 08:22 PM

I listen to far more old stuff than new stuff, so...

cardboard adolescent 11-13-2007 08:39 PM

Kudos?

Pitchfork: My Bloody Valentine Announce Reunion Shows!

I'm going to the London one! I'm so excited.

As for new material, I'm a little skeptical..I'm sure it would be at least somewhat good but I honestly can't see them getting near the quality of Loveless. There's something about Loveless that just makes me think it'll always be the absolute pinnacle of the noisy.shoegazer.tremelo sound. The production is remarkable.

cardboard adolescent 11-15-2007 02:11 PM

I already heard about this so I didn't bother reading the article, but from what I understand a lot of the "new material" was recorded right after Loveless... which definitely raises my hopes.

O'Bannion 11-15-2007 02:51 PM

They will probably headline Coachella with Portishead next year. THAT would be an amazing co-headlining gig.

White Lies 11-15-2007 02:52 PM

from a recent interview with Kevin Shields (conducted by the wonderful Ian Svenonius of Nation of Ulysses fame)...the new one will be 3/4 material recorded after Loveless, and 1/4 new stuff. So you have a point, although if it was THAT good then surely Shields wouldn't have called it quits? Or maybe there was another reason.

whatever I expect this to be a LOUD show.

Pitchfork: My Bloody Valentine Plan Digital Self-Release for LP

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-23-2008 05:30 PM

We'll be able to download it in holographic form by the time that gets finished.

sleepy jack 03-23-2008 05:33 PM

"Of course, if they're hitting the studio next month, that means the disc can probably be expected in 2008, and not before the end of the year, as Kevin Shields has claimed. Hey, better that than an endless parade of "eventually", amirite?"

Unless they decide to become the indie guns and roses.

Molecules 03-23-2008 08:50 PM

Anyone seeing them play in July?
I will be petrified in orgasmic distortion for the Manchester dates, having flashbacks to 5am MBV sessions by moonlight. mmm.

And if one more child tells me that their name sounds a bit 'emo' I will end them

sleepy jack 03-23-2008 08:51 PM

Anyone else think their name sound a bit emo?

Molecules 03-23-2008 08:53 PM
