Hippie grunge bands??? I don't think there are.

As for hippie rock you should go back to the psychedelic rock bands of the 60's such as Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and 13th Floor Elevators

Screaming Trees always reminded me of hippies. I'm not sure I would recommend them though.

Wow never though The Dead would be in the MGMT thread. But yeah anyone heard their first album? It's pretty sweet as well, but not nearly as good. More alternative, less experimental.

they were one of my favorite bands for a while. I almost enjoy each song on the album.

Okay, well Oracular Spectacular really was very good and I played the crap out of that thing for like a good solid month in my car. But I didn't fully fall in love with the band until I saw this video of them performing "This Must The Place" at their school before they were even MGMT. I'm sorry for being silly and cliched, but this is pretty much what music is all about

They have a new album coming out in April called Congratulations!

Judging from the ratings on Rateyourmusic, it may have leaked already.
