i wouldnt say that they are the greastes tband on earth but MAPS OF PROBLEMATIQUE is worth listening to ..

and some of their songs are simply overplayed on the radio stattions.like supermassive black hole

That's pretty oversimplifying them. I don't like Muse, but c'mon, they're riddled with prog elements. Prog in the 70s sense, anyway.

I don't see them as pop-rock at all. There are very, very few particularly commercially oriented tracks on their albums. Most of it is in a format totally ineligible for airplay or anything else. I'd say of Black Holes, the only song that truly qualifies as pop in my books is Starlight.

Probably Supermassive Black Hole too. That reminds me of Justin Timberlake. :laughing:

Cripes how could I forget Supermassive Black Hole. And yeah, totally Timberlake. That song just seemed out of place on the album.

So by pop/rock you were alluding to accessibility. That's not at odds with being prog. I'd say plenty of 70s prog bands could probably be described as having had a more "poppy" sound than Muse.

Myself, I see "pop/rock" as referring to a format of rock designed for radio airplay and mass consumption.

At any rate, I don't think Muse are particularly accessible. They're not at all the taste of your average listener. I guarantee most people couldn't stomach Bellamy's ridiculous vocals and the pointless, bombastic scaling riffs. It's much closer to the notion of 'acquired taste'.

It would be correct to say that their are more poppy sounding prog bands such as Rush from the 70's; but to pretend that MUSE has not reached mainstream appeal is foolish. They have like 3-4 vidoes that have been played on MTV (or MTV2 more likely, I think they still squeeze in an hour of music videos every once and a while) and damn near headline events such as ACL and VEGOOSE among other festivals that I didnt goto. Knights of Cydonia and Supermassive Black Holes got regular playtime on my local alternative radio station. If you were referring to just their first 2 CDs then you might get away with being quasi correct however.

Well, clearly the first 2. But even in the case of Black Holes And Revelations - what I'm questioning here, is just how MUCH of it could hold any mainstream appeal. Supermassive Black Holes, Starlight, unquestionably; Knights got airplay only on the more indie oriented stations where I am. As for the rest of the album, it's really anyone's guess whether your average Joe could stomach it. My guess is no.
